Volvo 340 uprated propshaft

Post by Chris-m » 19 Jan 2016 06:34 pm

Ive spent quite abit of time reading through old posts and build threads regarding the 340 propshaft issue

im also aware that alignment of the engine and gearbox helps prolong the life of the standard prop,
but these seem to be getting harder to find

Has anyone managed to find a custom propshaft company that can make a new prop that dosent have vibration or excessive weight issues?
Ive read somewhere driftmoto may have developed one, but can find much info on this

Any input would be great

cheers

If you uprate the propshaft, the bellhousing will crack instead.
Also if the propshaft is any heavier than the standard prop you'll knacker gear synchro cones.

Yea ive read this a few times now, but ive gone through 3 shafts and im stuggling to find them now

what happens when the "ebay rare tax" gets added to oem props and there £500 and only available once in a blue moon

How sure are you that everything else is perfect? I've read somewhere on here guys running high power engines without problems.

Bits I know:
Accurate torque wrench and correct new bolts for the clamps is essential.
Good mounting bushes all round (8)
Anything causing poor alignment static or under load.

Otherwise convert to 360. 340's are more numerous so chances of getting a good body are higher. 360s in good condition are alot more rare, but the engine/drive are usually good.

Im currently rebuilding my car with pretty much all new bushes, maybe bad engine mounts were the cause before, although they are already poly engine mounts ill be replacing them aswell

I read a few old threads saying that some poly mounts are 3mm too short and a washer needs to be used to get correct alignment, are classic swedes current mounts still the same? maybe this was my issue

I have been looking at 360 conversions, do complete drivetrain setups often come up for sale? whats the weight difference like in a 360?

cheers

Its not so much the drivetrain you need as full 360 engine and drive. The 360 engine and torque tube are heavier but I don't know how much. A torque tube needs care to lift, 340 prop shaft can be waved about in one hand. Overall the cars aren't massively heavier, probably {100kg). You really need the 2.3 turbo to make full use of all that weight.

You need some 360 engine parts, engines do come up with little interest. I do try to get people to keep the 360 unique parts like the sump, oil pump, bell housing gear change. Then you can use any red block.

Drive trains do come up too, there is a 360 breaking on ebay at the moment. The front of the gearbox and mainshaft are unique to 360 apparently. Take the gearbox and diff if you can.

I didnt realise they were only a tad heavier,

id be quite tempted by the 2.3 turbo, for the sake of reliability i think im gonna sell up all the renault stuff and get hunting some 360 bits,

i would just buy a 360 but ive just got my shell 100% rust free, dont fancy doing it again tbh

do the 2.3's bolt upto the 360 running gear fairly easy?

Exact some bell housing pattern but the engine mount hits the turbo so you either need a custom manifold to relocate the turbo or a custom engine mount or potentially both which is what I fear might be my option with the bigger Garret t3.

Thats handy to know, custom manifold shouldnt be an issue

anyone got any links to a good build thread?

I have a 360 propshaft and gearbox in a 340 car, and a b18ft. It runs perfectly in races whit 170 bhp, now it´s going to be more than 200.

I have make some propshaft, but they were heavier than stock prop and make a lot os vibrations, they was impossible to balance. To mount the 360 prop is easier than I think, It was 2 or 3 hours to adapt the parts.

Excuse me for my bad english.
