Just picked up my 345.. Need help please!!

Post by Twitch6284 » 22 Jan 2016 08:15 pm

Hey guys. I picked up my 1982 345 GL today, and its not all the seller promised it was, so I have questions.

I have established by some use of the search function that my carb bolts are probably loose. Put my foot down I get the jerk/half second of nothing, as mentioned in the sticky.. So will get on that first thing.

Also, the car just wont start when cold. Could this also be rectified with the tightening of the carb bolts? (really hoping the answer is yes to that... lol) It starts first turn when its warm..

But my main problem is that when the car is stationary, in neutral, if I let the clutch out I get a bit of a crunchy bang noise and then the whole car tries to shake itself to pieces, accompanied by some very unpleasant grinding noises... I am assuming this is prop alignment issues, (as that they have prop issues is the only thing I know about 340's..), I assumed engine mounts, but it has been suggested to me it may also be the bell housing bearing, or the rubber bit on the prop itself? It drives fine, when its moving theres no unpleasant noises, and all seems to be as it should. Sat on the motorway for 30 miles and nothing seemed wrong then. It seems to be the most prominent when the car is still.

I dont know, will get under it tomorrow and get some pictures, which will probably help you guys better than my confusing description... In Bristol at the moment and I need to get down to devon before monday for new job, that I very much need the car for!!

Yes, I agree its got to be the classic 340 prop-shaft rattle, gone mad. Maybe the gearbox mounts are a bit wobbly. I don't know what would make the grinding sounds unless its wear in the gear change mechanism causing that basket-weaving little cog on the gearbox selector plate (something to do with reverse gear) to try to engage when it shouldn't?? Carb air leaks gave me bad starting so I think you're right there, too. Good luck.

Thanks man. I tightened up the carb this morning, and that seems to have done it wonders! Its needs doing better when I have access to better tools, (how the hell are you supposed to get in there??? lol)

But sadly I have found the problem with the prop.. Some cretin has welded it to the output shaft at the front :(

Excess crankcase pressure can be caused by a blown head gasket, cracked block or worn piston rings or even the piston or bore is worn causing more blow by than standard. If you put your hand over the crankcase breather hose you should feel light pressure that isn't steady but should puff, if it is a strong pressure then there is definitely excess crankcase pressure.
