1.7 cutting out (any help be great)

So i know there is a million threads with similar issues. But last night ran into my first running issue.

Driving along the engine started the splutter an jump a bit then would cut out. Anyway had this happen multiple times on my journey home, didnt have issues gettin it started again which make me think fueling rather than spark?

I had to slam the brakes for an ambulance, this made it cut out.
The real issue was when i came to get up my road (quite a steep hill) i could just about get it started but as soon as i pulled away it would cut out right away, even if i tried to keep the revs high. (it would idle" fine" before this)

Ive ended up having to leave the car and will tow it up the hill tomo then have a proper look. There were no obvious fuel leaks or anything around the carb.

Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on similar problems before i start looking tomo? How can i test that i am getting fuel or have a fueling issue?

Any help greatly appreciated :D

I had this on my S40 t4, it was the fuel pump not maintaining pressure in the system. I dont know the 1.7 all that well, but i would start at the fuel pump.

Cheers ben ill have a look into it tomorow, the pump was something i was thinking may have gone

An S40 will be injection with a high pressure electric pump, it is nothing like a 1.7 carb which runs a low pressure mechanical pump.

Carb and air leak problems are common, but I would not rule out spark either. Do the standard tests for fuel and spark first, these are much easier and less hazardous on a carb engine.

Sorry im a bit of a novice here. i can check for sparks. ( but i assume these shoud be fine, recently new plugs,leads, cleaned dizzy cap and rotor arm) Is there anything to check apart from im gettin a spark? Also starts perfectly fine and still idles fine

But how shall i check fuel? just got it home im gettin a lot of air bubbles being pulled through the air filter and i can also see them in the return line at the sender, surely i shouldn't get this with a swirl pot?

i know that the s40 and the 340 1.7 are very different, but worth a check if the diaphragm issue

If you are going to do your own repairs and maintenance the Haynes manual is a good place to start. Alternatively the volvo workshop instructions are in the forum reference section, although I've never looked for basic maintenance.

Sparks you need to remove the king lead from the dizzy and lay it near some metal on the block, and turn the engine over, you should see a bright spark jump about 1", you can do the same for each lead. Even better is a set of plug lights/checkers from Halfords.

The 1.7 can have problems with oil leaking into the dizzy (not black drops, just a clear film), it starts and idles ok but when you apply throttle it dies, this is a classic weak spark symptom. The fuel drowns the spark.

For fuel, the pump is sealed to the engine and you will need a new gasket if you disturb it. The first thing to do it take the air filter cover off and look down the barrels while operating the throttle (engine is off), you should see fuel squirting down the barrel as you push it. If this is not ok then pull the main feed line off the carb and lay it on a thick absorbant cloth, then turn the engine over and see that fuel is pulsing out. Obviously be careful with the wet cloth.

Carb problems can be tricky and they really need proper adjustment and possibly rebuild. A common problem is an absorbant float, and a warped manifold joint.

Died on hill.... bubbles in the fuel filter... sounds like its run out of petrol ;-0

Yea i deffineily have the issue with the oil leaking into the dizzy i'm planing on replacing it soon but i dont think it would be this as i did clean it out about a week ago. Do you know where i could get a new seal and also a cam cover gasket?

Im getting fuel into the carb, checked that when it cut out on me. maybe im not as novice as i think haha. I had a slightly split fuel line at the sender at the tank so i'm about to replace that, i think maybe it was pulling air in from there and maybe starving the engine of fuel?

Also deffintely fuel in there, put £20 in about 15miles before it started cutting out on me...it was however very low before this...

okay so i took my dizzy cap of the check, there was actually a little pool of oil in there haha. Im going to change the seal along with new dizzy and rotor arm as soon as i can. Ill post up if it sorts all my issues. Thanks

Give it a clean with solvent and put it back in and test, will probably be ok for a few miles (assuming this is the problem).

I did this years ago, might have taken the cam bearing cap off (if there is one), other techniques are drill and 2 screws (might be tricky in a 1.7).

No one has mentioned my favorite subject.... the idle solenoid, talking of which I am having idling trouble with the 360.... its idea of idling is to go thhrummm, thhrummm, thhrummm.... to the screech of the power-steering belt, which is all a bit hannoying.

Are the internal contacts on the dizzy cap okay - more specifically the centre carbon contact?
I recently had this issue and my dizzy cap was shot to hell.

Thanks for the replys, i cleaned all dizzy bits up and also put a new cam seal in. Took it for a quick spin and everything seemed fine, so i am guessing it was the dizzy cap after all!!

I still have bubbles in my fuel filter, is that something to worry about?? i cant see thats its pulling air in from anywhere :S
