It does sound like it is getting blow by with the oil spewing out.

Needing choke to run with low compression is something you will exact as the engine is not pulling as hard on the carb to draw the fuel in
Ahh i see, well if he wants me to go back up i will

Thanks for the input guys.

I had thought, like Ben did that a compression problem would be more of a constant thing, but that does make sense.. A friend is going to bring over a compression tester over the next couple of days for me.

Yeah, to be fair I have been struggling to make up my mind about what to do, but there are many other unrelated life factors that have been adding up on top of this and taking their toll... (And the fact I have barely got out of since Ben left until literally this morning because I have been stupidly ill, meaning the brain has not been fully functional..)

All going to plan, I should have a complete donor car with me this weekend. So depending on how that is, I may stick the engine from that in this and steal any panels that are in better nick than mine, or I may just chuck that one through an MOT and see how it fares (probably do that first either way to be honest, although looking at its previous MOT history it sounds proper rotten underneath). Still, apparently engine runs well... And it has a crack free windscreen, so whatever happens that will be a win.

All will be revealed soon...

Well if you do remove the engine, can i put my name down for the "broken" one and the engine splash guard (if it is not needed) please spares are always good.

I will be keeping the old engine and stripping it down to find out what is actually wrong with it and repairing it if its repairable. I just want to know what it is, plus I need the spares myself, which is the main reason I am buying a complete car and not just an engine.

And can you stop putting things in inverted commas, it comes across as incredibly condescending.
The engine doesnt work, therefore it is broken.

Hmm, got a little sidetracked from what I came here to say..

Could a blocked fuel filler neck breather pipe cause problems like this?

I will have a look at that tomorrow then, I was trying to think outside the box.

I got a restrictor in that pipe today, and it still runs like crap, and still needs full choke.

One thing I did notice is that it didnt do any of the big bangs before it died today. It just was making the strange noises from inside the carb when it tried to cut out and I gave it a little tweak of throttle to try and keep it going (like the weird low pitched fart noises when you let the air out a balloon) before cutting out. It made these noises before, but they were usually accompanied by the pops and bangs, which I didnt get today.. Perhaps I hadnt run it for long enough to get to that stage, Im not sure it was fully up to operating temp when I gave up today.

test the idle solenoid, turn the key to pos 2 (engine does not need to run) see if it click when wire removed and reattached, quick and easy test, you never know.

I ran mine once with no restriction the revs were very high but she drove from lincs to b'ham and back (i still dont know how)

I'd love to be a fly on the wall the next time you try to sort this car out.

I was only using inverted commas so you knew which engine i was talking about, I am dyslexic and sometimes what i type does not come across right so I try to make sure what I type is understood, that was all!

Did you check the spark?

I just realised this sounds very familiar to what happened to my mk2 golf, most of the problems were traced back to a loose connection on the coil so check everything is firmly connected and not corroded, also check the wiring is all fine.

Just cause they lit up doesn't mean it is a strong spark you should check it just in case. You need to see the actual colour of the spark, a pale blue/white spark is healthy a yellow spark is crap.

Hey guys. I need to find out if the fuel pump on an '89 is the same as one on a '82 1.4.

Managed to pick me up a donor, and it will run if something is poured down the carb, but the pump is goosed buy the look of things, as it wont draw anything through, and the filter is empty. Will change the lines and see if it is that first..
