Does the idle solenoid click when you disconnect and reconnect it (ignition on)?

Re: Jayk's little 345
I still think its a crankcase pressure problem personally, which is why it spits all of its oil out of the seals when it dies, and why it runs fine for the first few minutes, before crankcase pressure builds.
It only idles on choke because of the lack of restrictor in that pipe, which means its drawing far too much air in and leaning it out no? The old one was like that, blanked off that pipe and it would only idle off choke.. Its the lack of restrictor causing the lean problem making it need the choke, surely.
Checked 3 different coils, no difference, different condensor, no difference. As mentioned its had a new carb, and new plugs, new fuel lines, fuel filter.. I need to try some other HT leads, although to be fair I am probably just going to put another engine in it. I cant be arsed with faffing around with this one any longer, I havent the time or money, and noone has any idea what is wrong with it..
People keep suggesting blocked things, but almost everything there is to be blocked has been changed, and this also doesnt explain the crazy oil leaks it didnt have before developing this problem. And if it was a blocked line or jet, or something like that, then surely it would either not run at all if it was fully blocked or be unpredictable in its intermittence if the blockage was moving around, which it isnt.. Its entirely predictable every step of the way. Does the same thing every time... Which I would have thought would point to something else??

Are the plug leads on in the right order ;-?
Might be the head gasket.

As far as i know the leaded are right, she ran on full choke and tbh run quite nice, albeit on full choke

Excess crankcase pressure could be caused by:
Blown headgasket
Worn piston rings
Cracked block
Put your hand over the crankcase breather hose and see if it has a small amount of pressure and should puff, if it is a lot of pressure and is like pulsing then you know it has too much pressure causing all of the oil leaks.

Compression test? Try to do tests rather than change stuff.
For the breather, block the carb side and leave the crank side open. This will eliminate the restriction from enquiries. It doesn't make so much different without the restriction. The idle is just a bit lumpy and variable.

Re: Jayk's little 345
I have to say it is sounding more and more like a compression problem

even though i could get her to run on full choke, if it was a compression issue, surely it'll always have an issue on or off choke?classicswede wrote:I have to say it is sounding more and more like a compression problem

No harm in doing a compression test anyway just to see what is going on inside.benji1985 wrote:even though i could get her to run on full choke, if it was a compression issue, surely it'll always have an issue on or off choke?classicswede wrote:I have to say it is sounding more and more like a compression problem

Have you checked the idle solenoid? Like Ride-on says it should click if not that could be the answer to many of our problems.
Re: Jayk's little 345
does it just click with power on, or does the engine need to be running?360beast wrote:Have you checked the idle solenoid? Like Ride-on says it should click if not that could be the answer to many of our problems.
will it still work on full choke?

Re: Jayk's little 345
Hey man
it will click when you turn the ignition on - the starter motor does not have to turn and the engine does not have to start. Just put the ignition on, disconnect the idle solenoid and it will click if its working. It will go click each time you re-connect and disconnect the wire, if its working. If you train your ear, you can even hear it click whenever you turn the ignition key, providing the bonnet and driver's window are open!! Man, its an art, I jest. When the idle solenoid is not working, the only way to keep the car running is to have it on full choke, so your symptoms are about right, but I don't understand the high pressure stalling business since if its just solenoid trouble, the engine will keep running as long as its not under any great load, I think. If the idle solenoid is at fault, you can keep the car running with the choke but it just likes to die and misfire whenever you get to traffic lights and roundabouts, etc.

Good to know, I think he has decided to do something with a donor car now... i am not sure what.bogbasic wrote:Hey man

Re: Jayk's little 345
Dont think he can make his mind up tbh.
It does sound like it is getting blow by with the oil spewing out.
Needing choke to run with low compression is something you will exact as the engine is not pulling as hard on the carb to draw the fuel in
