Thread size of oil pressure sender?/B172 (1986)

Post by de Dion » 30 May 2016 11:06 am

Hi,
Can anyone advise me as to the thread size of the oil pressure sender on the (1986.) B172 engine.
I need to order a VDO pressure sender unit to enable me to install the gauge and would prefer not to have to use a thread converter.(Adds to risk of oil leaks; particularly as VDO advise NOT to use thread sealers as these interfere with the earth grounding and adversely effect the readings.) They also offer1/8" taper threads which can also lead to problems ! Thank you in anticipation of your kind help.
John.

I would have thought that eBay was your best friend on that one. If you have an old unit, can you measure the thread with one of those funny sliding ruler devices from Poundland?

I think it is the same as the B200, mine came with the adaptor in its original box.

But I remember reading about a 1/8npt to m14 x 1.5 adaptor.

Hi,
Thank you both. I see that the Volvo (1988 accessories price list) shows "adaptor" for oil pressure gauge B17 models Part number 3417001-9.
So I will phone our local Volvo agent and see if I can assertain any further information.Failing this it looks like I will have to remove the present "warning light sender unit "and measure it. I will report back my findings.

I just had a quick look and found this and I was right in the adaptor but it looks just like the one fitted to my B200 so I don't think the adaptor is necessary.

Hi,
Good of you to go to the trouble to obtain further information (360beast).
I wondered what sort of adapter would be needed as the present oil warning light unit is very close to the oil filter.
Our local Volvo agent informs me that part number 3417001-9 is no longer available. I will try a Renault agent as a long shot,or place a request in our" Parts Wanted" section. Maybe if like other manufacturers Volvo have changed to a much smaller high efficiency oil filter this would help the clearance problems as the VDO senders are quite large.
I also find I will need a special tool to remove the present sender in order to measure the thread size.
Thanks again.
John.

I just read your first post again and it clicked you are going to order a pressure sender! (you did state it but it didn't go in).

Here is the information you will need

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthrea ... 966&page=2

The sender you need is VDO 360-081-030-049K

I emailed Mardi Gras motorsport asking if they would do it cheaper and they knocked some off.

Here is a photo of mine next to the oil filter, the senders are quite small and give plenty of clearance next to the filter (if they didn't fit they wouldn't have put them there).

Aaaand here it is, this is the one you need

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorspor ... vdo-gauges

Here are the fitting instructions

viewtopic.php?f=37&t=3855

The B200 doesn't use the brass elbow adaptor where as the high friction engines (b19 b21 b23) do use it, the b200 uses the straight brass adaptor that the b14 uses so hopefully your b172k will need the same one.

... Is that my anorak on the floor? I best pick it up

Hi Again, 360beast
Thank you for all the information you have provided. It never ceases to amaze me how much time & effort members are willing to put in to help others.
By coincidence I did buy my voltmeter & oil pressure gauges from Demon Tweeks,(Despite being shown as "in stock" it took them nearly one week to despatch them.Otherwise no grumbles.)
I deferred from buying the sender unit until I had further information. Now provided thanks to you (not forgetting Duvel78 for making so much information freely available.)
You would have needed that anorak in Northmptonshire today. Found out that an ordinary 22mm box spanner will remove the present sender to check thread type, then retired indoors to seek shelter! Will possibly continue tomorrow weather permitting. Thanks again.
John.

Hi,
I have today removed the "sender" for the dashboard warning light and my screw gauge tells me the thread size is M18x1.5 (i.e.isometric).As there does not appear to be as much room on the B172 Renault engine as on the Volvo engines for the obviously larger oil gauge sender, I may have to use a " T " piece (M18x1.5 )with pressue gauge take off ( M10x1 )at right angles to the original orientation (obtainable from "Demon Tweeks")together with VDO 360-081-029-001C. oil pressure sender unit. This combination would at least avoid taper threads.
