Gearbox and Diff spare parts / upgrading

Post by Maxx » 03 Aug 2016 01:32 pm

Hey there, I'm new to the Volvo scene so forgive me for asking a simple question,

Does anyone know what other model Volvo uses the same diff and gearbox as the 340??

I'm having trouble placing parts for my rebuild,

Thanks in advance,
Maxx

I think it was unique, bar the 360.
1988 340 1.4 GL, 218k, 5 door (Grey Bess). Gone to CBA.
1991 340 1.7 GL, 64k, 5 door, petrol blue (Deep Blue).
1988 360 2.0 GLE, 140k, 5 door, ocean blue metallic (Blue Bess).
1989 340 1.7 GL, 108k, 3 door (Red Ness).

The gearbox parts are likely to be shared with any other Volvo fitted with the M45/M47 series gearbox (240, 740, 940) but the unit as a combined transaxle is unique, as bogbasic says.
1989 - Volvo 360 GLT
1985 - Volvo 360 GLS
2008 - Volvo S60 SE Lux

Thanks guys, so I can start scouring the local scrap yards for 240/740/940 gearboxes and diffs,

Were these all RWD aswell then?? Just with the gearbox mounted up front??

The diff from the 2/7/9 won't fit as the diff on a 300 is bolted on to the gearbox the others it is in the rear axle so won't fit.

To get it to fit you would have to remove it from the casing and then it would probably require some machining to fit in the 300 casing.

Yes all RWD but with live axles, so rather different. Its not impossible to get 300 replacements and even LSD are doable.

The 4 and 5 speed gearboxes are slightly different and need different diffs. The front of the 360 gearbox is different to the 340 as the props and mounting points are different.

300 diffs vary by ratio, pinions must match crown wheel.

200/700/900 boxes share many internal parts and gear lever bits. Later 940s use M90 clutch/gearbox which is no use without massive chassis mods.
