Sorry to hear of your troubles Jon sounds like you had a rough day with the car... :(
I had a rough day too if it's any consolation...my youngest managed to stick a garden fork through his toe while digging for carrots at a 'pumpkin patch farm' we were visiting so that cut our day short with a 20 mile drive to the nearest A&E  How he managed it I have no idea but there was some squabbling with his big brother and in the blink of an eye the deed was done !

I will need to check again myself the gear lever operation. I just know that I can usually reverse out fine first go. With the car running and in neutral I then struggle to go straight to reverse. Neutral to 3rd is never a problem and then I go to reverse and it usually always goes fine. First gear can be a little graunchy as well if I don't give the synchros a second or two to catch up. Agricultural for sure but it definitely seems to be the character of the 360....
These sort of things happen and hopefully you will get the hole/rust sorted out. Give the 3rd to reverse trick another go and see how you get on. sm4

Cheers Dave, so sorry to hear your youngest had a fork accident. He must have let you know about it ;-0 ;-0 You'll have to get them steel toe-caps ;-0 They are compulsory at the steam railway place where I volunteer. Ta jc

Argh what a nightmare Jon, don't feel too bad about it - easily done!

I remember having a starting issue in a Skoda Felicia when I first started driving at a roundabout, I started pushing it out of the way due to the traffic but 3-4 pedestrians started 'helping' me, next thing I know we're starting to roll pretty quickly down a hill and I only just managed to jump back in before it ran away with me!

Thank you. I had been pushing my 1.7 backwards and forwards on the flat like a yoyo and didn't think twice about the 360. Oh well it just ended up in the mud and brambles so not too bad ;-0 ;-0

I'll go and see the welder on Fri. Just got so many MOTs coming up it's a nightmare.

Anyway I have been tackling the petrol smell on Deep Blue which was due to a dodgy overflow hose.

Hah! Finally the outboard cylinder head gasket is replaced and now working fine.

Thankfully not mine. ;-0

Getting the petrol overflow hoses back together on Deep Blue.

Inside and underneath, hose clip and rubber seal cursing in abundance.

But it's all back together now and due an MOT soon ;-0

Nice update Jon, good you have solved the fuel smell, any whiff of fuel is always rings alarm bells !

Youngest son is recovering fast, knowing him he would still manage an accident with steel toe wellies lol ! In my work I have to go around all sorts of construction sites and years ago I was doing work at Glasgow Airport. Steel toe boots are no use in an airport going through the scanners so the work got me a pair of kevlar boots, top notch and still going strong today!

Those Seagull motors are pretty bombproof, my father in law has a really old one that takes an 18mm spark plug and has an open flywheel/rope starter. Before the 360 arrived most of my spare time was spent collecting/restoring old stationary engines.

What steam railway do you volunteer for ? I am quite close to the Doon Valley Industrial Railway which you might have heard of, they have the UK's only working fireless steam loco that they pre-charge with steam and it chugs along for a few hours per charge...

Hello Dave

It's this one: https://hamptonkemptonrailway.org.uk/

I don't do anything clever there - just gardening ;-0 ;-0

There are two big steam pumps on site which are run by kemptonsteam.org and the train people have one engine which is stationary, although it's meant to be in a train, called a syntex or simplex, something like that. Ta jc

Bit of an update. Here's the rear valance that demolished a couple of posts ;-0 ;-0

She passed the MOT and is now at the proper welder to sort the rear valance damage and the rust elsewhere.

Meanwhile, a virtual dashboard in a 1.4 imitating H. G. Wells' time machine.

Bit different story now, been trying to fix a jammed passenger seat motor in a Hyundai!

Image
Image

I don't get it but there is a limit switch and when the seat is at its furthest point forwards, the motor can try to move in the forwards direction (i.e. making the collision with the limit switch worse) but it cannot move backwards, i.e. its completely stuck. I got it off the limit switch by disconnecting and by-passing it with a bit of wire. The motor then got power to wind the seat backwards again.

This makes me think one of the connectors is swapped over or something but I can't see any connections where this would be possible. Maybe the limit switch has been fitted the wrong way round or something but to remove it is an absolute pain because the screws face downwards about 2 inches above the floor and are very tightly done up ! !

Its an early-model import from Singapore (2 years before Hyundai exported them to the UK) so I'm thinking maybe the different LHD/RHD electrics weren't fully sorted at that stage, or is that a completely mad idea ? ?

A bit more testing shows that the limit switch is in the wrong way round.

Image

If the seat is going forwards you can only stop it by pressing the limit switch button in the direction that it would be hit if the seat was going backwards, and vice versa. Aren't mechanics supposed to test this sort of thing when they repair things? Duh, despair on Jon.

The only problemmo is that I haven't worked out how to unscrew the switch from underneath ;-0

Needed Philip's screwdriver bit and tiny spanner. Turned the switch round and now it's working perfectly.

Now it's time to sort the leccy window switch.

Hi Jon, Not been on for a week or two, good to hear you have a pass. How long will she be away at the welders ? Keep up the good work !! Apart from being out to the 360 to start it up every 2 - 3 weeks, all is quiet up in the north !! Cheers Dave

Cheers Dave, yep, she's having a wicked time at the welder as we speak.

Been tangling with the limit switch on the Hyundai and found that to refit the side trim panel requires removing the seat again.

Anyway, all's awesome and back together again. Indeed the car is used to acquire my next secret project - a Wessex Lift Boy GB1 automatic garage door opener.

It's new but 40 YO so getting it going might need some reverse engineering. Its 10 foot in length so transport took advantage of the Hyundai's split folding back seats and prestigious dashboard ;-0 ;-0

More work on the Hyundai switches has cured the passenger-side front window of its tendency to stick open. It was just a pivot pin for the up-or-down button which had popped-out.

Image

The garage door lifter is then wrapped up a bit and transported to its final location by 340.
