360 carby fuel supply
360 carby fuel supply
Anyone know the 360 fuel supply system? It seems to be a minefield of pipes and some sort of reservoir under the carby. My 360 has a good spark but poor fuel supply, or at least I think that is why it does not start reliably. I can tip some fuel into the carby and it then starts and runs fine but a couple of days later it refuses to start. Spark still good so I changed the fuel pump (the previous one had done 30 years so thought it might be iffy). Anyhow, still not starting. I will try to prime the pump with some petrol tomorrow and see how reliably it starts over the coming week. Generally a bit wissed-off with this problem since I had high hopes that the new fuel pump would help when in fact it seems to have achieved nothing. Has anyone tried changing the carby model fuel pump? There is no space your hands let alone a torch to see what you are doing... even less space for a socket to undo the bolts.... your hands are forever fighting against tensioned hoses and cables.... the job is one of the worst I've had to do on the git.

Re: 360 carby fuel supply
How old are your braided fuel hoses? If they're old they can suck air and mean the pump can't operate to it's potential.

Test first before assuming old=dead.
Doing a test is still valid, pop the carb feed pipe off and into a jar, then crank the engine. Likewise fill the jar full of fuel and try the feed pipe to the pump if it will suck it up. This will tell you something. Sounds like could be a blockage.
The thing under the manifold is called a vapour seperator for when the engine is hot and sitting parked up, but it also feds back fuel to the tank, so it may be a pressure regulator too.

Re: 360 carby fuel supply
Thank you for that. I tried a new fuel filter and tested two new fuel pumps but still no luck. I then tested it with an electric fuel pump which I meant to fit to another car a couple of years ago and it started first time and ran perfectly. So I have decided to switch over to an electric fuel pump. You will be staggered by how impressive my technical skills at fitting this to the PS pipes are.... chuckle ;-0
The pump makes a pretty rapid ticker - ticker - ticker - ticker sound which I am not used to. The only other car I know which has a leccy fuel pump is a Morris Minor and what happens is the pump goes fast to start with and then slows down when the carb is full. That is not a re-circulating system, unlike the 340/360 which is, so I guess that is why the pump is ticking over so fast. Someone I know said it was OK if it runs pretty fast but I am still a bit nervous. Please let me know if it is a problem for the pump i.e. will it wear out too quickly and is there a way to slow it down reliably. Maybe a rheostat or something. Still lots of fiddling about to fit the wiring but the fuel system basically works with the new pump and a bit of plumber's PTFE tape has even stopped it leaking .

Re: 360 carby fuel supply
It will tick fast constantly being a recirculating electric pump, if it gets really loud then it is running out of fuel. What pressure is it running though? It will want to be around 3psi.
Re: 360 carby fuel supply
Yo! It works. I found a free connector on the end of an ignition-controlled black and white wire which is just next to the fuse box and wired the new pump to this. It all seems awesome. I tried a couple of rheostats to lower the pump speed but they both sparked and smoked, so I quickly gave up on that idea!! The pump will just have to jiggle away to its own ticker-ticker-ticker sound which you cannot really hear from the passenger compartment so it should not be too embarassing for the driver.
Does anyone know if that wire is fused?? Its the one to a blank connector just below and beside the fuse box.

Re: 360 carby fuel supply
Hello, I have been through the circuit diagram and the only black-and-white (W-SB; does SB stand for schwartz-black or sumthin?) wire that is likely to be it seems to be something to do with foglamps, so I guess this must have been the connector to use if you fitted the optional front foglamps, or something. If so, then it is fused, so we should be OK, assuming that a petrol pump does not consume a lot more current than a foglamp setup. So there we go, we won't have front foglamps, but we'll have some petrol instead, arf!!

Two slight mods to the previous situaish...
I've applied some conducting paint to improve the earth connection and (oh Lord, there's a mozzy buzzing round my head)...
...this website is a nightmare - it doubles-up all yer images.... look at that awesome blanking plate that covers the original fuel pump mounting place.... its expertly honed from scrap ali....
... even the cat approves. Roll on September for my mental health review and I might even be allowed to drive again, arf, titter, or they'll all be down scrap alley!!

Re: 360 carby fuel supply
First to post on the new-look forum. Some of my recent posts here have gone a bit missing but never mind cos the system is back to square-one with a mechanical fuel pump. I was led into it by the MACster.
Note no leccy fuel pump no more. This new mechanical one does what it is supposed to do and should be more reliable than a leccy one - the last of which caused lots of fuel leakage from the carburettor, presumably due to it working at too high a pressure. Fitting a mechanical pump is a bit of a mare but all's well that ends well, bar the grazed hands. Drop me a post if anyone is still reading this...

Re: 360 carby fuel supply
Still having problems with starting which can only be cured by filling the float chamber with petrol from a little funnel. The frequency of these problems has increased a lot. I had been advised that there isn't anything that can go wrong with the carburettor that could prevent the car starting. However, finally decided to take the carb apart and what do we see....
... it doesn't show very well but the little brass pipe which is lying on its side was actually at the bottom of the float chamber - i.e. it had fallen out from somewhere. But, where does it go?? I initially thought it must go in the hole which I have pointed it at, but its too loose and simply falls out. So take apart a spare old carbie....
...and there it is, right next to the other brass pipe. So tapped it into the right hole - its a tight fit so it must be right!
A bit of bodging of the carb gasket and everything back together again. Filled the carb with fuel and started the engine - all OK. I will now need to monitor the restarting situaish over the next few days, but hoping we might be making progress.
Oh, by the way that cat had to be put to sleep, but here's the new one...
