driveshafts and other parts
Hi all,
Could anyone tell me if the driveshafts from a 1.4 are suitable for a 1.7 ? The ones I've got have shafts with a 25mm diameter. Also, are most parts (apart from certain engine and ancillary parts) interchangeable between the two ? I am thinking of interior and exterior trim parts, electrical, clutch (?), flywheel (?). In fact, is it easier to say which parts are NOT interchangeable ?
Thanks, Peter.

Re: driveshafts and other parts
Yes mostly common, just the engine is different, some slight difference on strut angles maybe. Not sure about flywheel and clutch.
I guess you are talking about the half shaft / CV joints, yes all 300 with a carb uses the same ones including 360s
The 1.4 auto uses a unique propshaft. There are more variations by year on trim and body parts.

Does the injection 360 use a different half shaft?Ride_on wrote:I guess you are talking about the half shaft / CV joints, yes all 300 with a carb uses the same ones including 360s
Re: driveshafts and other parts
Hi guys,
Thanks very much for the replies. I knew there would be some knowledgeable members on here. I had been told that the 2.0 models had "beefed-up" thicker driveshafts (half-shafts), but I no longer have any of my old 340/360's to make a comparison. However, if they are definitely the same on the 1.4 and 1.7, then that is good.
Another question, if you don't mind - are the cube-shaped rubber engine mount blocks the same for the 1.4 and 1.7.
Sorry for all the questions, but there is a lad coming to me at the weekend who wants some parts for his 1.7 and all mine are from a 1.4, and I want to be able to give him anything that might be of use to him,
Many thanks, Peter.

Re: driveshafts and other parts
Hi Ride-on,
Thanks for the info. If anyone would know the various differences, it would be you with your impressive list of 340/360s.
I just noticed your comment about the propshaft. I have one from a manual 1.4, which the lad with the 1.7 is desperate to have for his car. I assume this is the same for both models (?). It is the one with composite rubber joints at both ends, which hold the splined connectors.
Cheers, Peter.

1.4 manual petrol
1.7 manual petrol
1.6 manual diesel
All the same propshaft.

Yes, it has 3 bumps on the shaft (for added pleasure) and a wider spined joint into the middle of the CV joints. The CV outer and balls seem to be the same.360beast wrote: Does the injection 360 use a different half shaft?

Also the 360s use special hex head bolts were the shaft is narrower that the thread (unlike 340s standard cap head bolt). I think this is to help stretch and hold the bolt in place, as the 340 ones do tend to fail at the bolts, possibly after lossening.

Re: driveshafts and other parts
Hi guys,
Thanks again for the further info. The half shaft difference is interesting. I still have some left over from when i had 340/360s and I thought they were basically the same, despite one having the 3 bumps you mentioned. The shaft diameter is the same on both types (25mm), but when I checked the diameter where it goes into the CV joint, as you described, I measured the diameter on the "normal" one as 21mm and the "bumpy" one as 23mm. Is the difference really that small ? Also, the "bumpy" one still has a few of the bolts in it and they are the type you undo/tighten with an Allen key, which I think are different from your description, unless I have misunderstood. I can only assume that someone in the past has used the Allen bolts to secure the shaft, perhaps on a 340, instead of the other bolts you mentioned. It just goes to show, you are never too old to learn new things !
Cheers, Peter.
