340 redblock conversion
340 redblock conversion
Hi
i am from Portugal and am currently swapping a b200et from a 740 turbo into my recently accquired 340 1.4
i already have the loom and gas tank sorted and the 340 ready to receive the new engine.
i will be ditching the rear gearbox and installing a custom prop and an axle from other car
finding a 360 here is impossible so its my only option
i will post pics of my progress today
i have a question
can anyone supply me a pic of an empty 360 engine bay?
i need to know the 360 crossmember - sump - mounts locations etc so i can fabricate the needed mods to my crossmember, maybe lowering the steering rack or cutting the sump etc. i cant find anything usefull on the web. do you know if the engine bolts to the arb support member or if if bolts to the main crossmember wich houses also the steering rack?

Re: 340 redblock conversion
the car...bought for 190€ plus 25€ towing fee and sold the engine for 125€ - current cost 90€
Re: 340 redblock conversion
first job was patching rust holes...it was my first time mig welding , only knew how to weld stick
please guys try to help me with the question i put in the first post, it is what is holding my progress currently
i promise lots of pics
cheers from Portugal
i will be using the standard m46? transmission with the overdrive because its what i have. and i am not sure anbout radiator choice until i mount the engine. gearbox mount will be dead easy it it fits the tunnel (i hope i will)please guys try to help me with the question i put in the first post, it is what is holding my progress currently

Re: 340 redblock conversion
That looks like a brilliant project and some decent welding.
Good luck, hope it all goes well.
I might be able to take photos of the underside of my 360 at some point this week to show the mountings as best I can with the engine in the way

Re: 340 redblock conversion
thank you 360beast that would be super helpfull if you could do it. or if you just tell me how its mounted it would be of some use.
Re: 340 redblock conversion
Awesome work. There are some 360 engine bay pictures in my blog (jbc.me.uk) and if you look at the end of Year 11, there are some pictures of the engine mountings and the cross-bar thing.

Re: 340 redblock conversion
yesterday i was bored and pressure washed the engine bay because it was filthy and now it makes me more motivated to work on it
this is the donor 740 wich is also mega-filthy but runs good
the weird propane hoses are for a temporary fuel tank and pump i installed to test the engine because the original was rotten and the pump seized this is a mitsubishi colt fuel tank as temporary tank to power the 740, pressure is 3 bars
later i will use the pump assembly and internal swirl pot and fit it into the 340 tank along with a walbro pump the loom i trimmed to the essentials and tested the engine if still runs
now with a schematic i have i will redo it entirely with the old one by my side and the schematic to stop me from making mistakes
engine is out and its filthy
has a leak on the oil pressure switch and on the turbo return line
it leaks gasoline into the oil so maybe a clogged injector or the cold start injector seized open now i have good and bad news
good news is the rear axle from the 740 is almost the lenght of the 340 so it will fit, although i have to redrill it to 4x100 on a machine shop. i will use the rear disk brakes also
bad news is gearbox wont fit the 340 tunnel..i will try to bash it but i will probably have to strip the interior to widen the tunnel

Re: 340 redblock conversion
Pretty sure when I have seen others do this on 300 power they cut the tunnel out and make new wider one.
Re: 340 redblock conversion
tomorrow i will dismantle the rest of the 740 and before scrapping it i will cut out the tunnel and keep it in case i need to weld it to the 340. the gas pedal is very close to the tunnel so it will require a bit more fabrication but nothing too difficult just time consuming.
Re: 340 redblock conversion
hi!
today i stripped the interior of the car and hacked ther tunnel
test fitted the engine and box but i am frustrated!!!
the steering rack fouls the clutch cylinder, i then removed it temporarily
mounted the engine without sump but the oil pump fouls the steering rack and its impossible to relocate the rack, i could mount it further down but it will hit the floor on a bump.
no matter if i place the engine close to the firewall or all the way to the front the problems remain
now my plan is to cut the sump to clear the rack,it will barely clear but i have to cut a big chunk of it, then make engine mounts and deal with the clutch later, but i may get into trouble, also i would prefer to have the engine all the way to the back close to the firewall i think the car would handle better.
my head is boiling and i cant find a solution, i have no problem fabricating but i cannot think of what to fabricate on this case. the oil pump is drive by a shaft and its impossible to relocate. otherwise i would simply flip the sump and make a larger pickup pipe.
i was so angry i did not tke photos and now its dark, tomorrow i will show you.
please tell me the volvo 360 redblock oil pump its the same as the one on the 740?
also the subframe from the 360 and 340 are the same?
best regards
Hugo

Re: 340 redblock conversion
Hello, the subframes are different but you can cut a 340 one to fit to a 360 by removing two small brackets.

Re: 340 redblock conversion
hi thanks for your reply but thats the front subframe,i already cut the brackets
i am talking about the one that holds the steering rack

Re: 340 redblock conversion
engine is mocked in place with some blocks of wood
front clearance looks like this
the mechanical fan will go to the junk clearance from the turbo to the chassis rail
looks ok to me steering rack is unbolted because it fouls the bracket of the clutch cylinder for the mounts i will weld this piece of tube like this and insert a generic engine mount, those cylindrical with a threaded rod on each end please any ideas are welcome before i screw up further

Re: 340 redblock conversion
well today is sunday so in a 4 hours spare time i started doing the sump
it now clears the steering rack by 2cm all around
i still have to weld it on the inside, weld some baffles, tidy up the outside and make a dipstick tube so another 4 or 5 hours of work
it looks strange shaped because of the oil pump wich requires the side bulge....but it will be under the car so who cares
the metal was from an old washing machine but the thickness is about the same as the sumps metal...it was a sturdy washer

Re: 340 redblock conversion
I was going to get the photos for you yesterday but completely forgot to do it when working on my 360. If you still need them I can hopefully get them sometime this week.
