Right I need to change the clutch tomorrow as its "slightly worn". Now im not a novice to engines however this is my 1st RWD car.

Could anybody give me a basic step by step to changing the clutch please

Ok you are best lifting the engine out. Undo all the bits holding it in. You will need to slide the prop off. All is fairly simple.

Lift the engine out?? I will be doing this on my own on my driveway, lifting out the engine seems a bit extreme for a 1 day job.

yeah, you don't need to take the engine out, but you do need to follow Mr Haynes instructions. You'll need to drop the exhaust and remove the downpipe. That's probably the most difficult part cos it'll be rusted up.

If you have difficulty getting to the clutch housing bolts then take the heater box out, it jumps out in 5 minutes and gives you a load more space.

You'll need to support the engine weight with a jack on the sump. Use a block of wood to soften the force cos AFAIK the rear engine mounts are on the bellhousing itself.

Once you've got it all off and moving, it'll probably take a fair bit of winkling to get the housing off cos it'll be seized onto the splines. Make sure to give the splines a good clean and then a light coat of grease before assembly.

All the other details should be in Haynes.

I was kinda hoping to fumble through it without mr haynes, I know i could pic up a haynes from a market stall for 50p so dont want to spend out on a new copy. cheapskate.....

go for it ...whilst your thinking about it you could of had it done
if you look at it you will see that it is not that hard at all
disconect exhaust down pipe from manifold
undo starter bolts
undo top bellhousing bolts
underneath.....
remove prop
undo bellhousing bolts
disconect clutch cable
support engine and remove rear engine mounts
remove bellhousing
remove clutch
there you are haynes manual in ENGLISH

I've found it much faster to take the engine out. You can do it in acouple of hours once youve sussed out what you are doing. There is a fair amount of space fortunatly.

If you fancy coming over and helping me tomorrow then i might explore that option... unfortunatly I dont have and engine hoist/stand so its not really an option, although it would be nice to change it on a bench with all the room i could want..

Do it exactly as dafodil says, its about as easy as RWD clutches come, Ive done mine so many times I can do it in just over an hour, in the drive on axle stands

well i had a go today but the trolley jack broke, so im going to give it a go tomorrow. with my new ferodo clutch kit...

Does anybody know the special magic trick needed to get the bottom bellhousing bolts out without taking off the cross member??

The cap head ones you mean?? If so get an allen head bit for a ratchet and hammer it into the bolts to make sure its in properly then undo them!! Make sure the rear engine mount nuts are loose first though!!!
