360 gearbox the same as a 240

Well the 360 has let me down yet again, I'm begining to really dislike the little thing, so a small question, if I tear it apart is the gearbox (5 speed) the same as what was fitted to the 240?

And before anyone asks, it let me down last week but the drivers side windscreen wiper shearing off in bad rain, the rear box starting to blow (badly) and alternator packed in, the battery now wont hold a charge and the rear boot lock has sheared the metal metal around the meachanism, oh and two holes in the top of the arches!!

Hi stuntman

The 240 gearbox and the 360 gearbox isn't the same on the outside, but as the 240 is named M47 and the 360 is named M47R, I only think it's the actually casing that differs.

Without knowing it, I would mean the inside should be somehow the same!

But why? Have you crashed the box?

Regards.
Peter

If I have read it right Andy wants to convert the 240 from auto to manual using the box from the dying 360

Hmmm... :?

Problems sound trivial to be honest, it's hardly like anything major has gone wrong - just lots of niggly things at once. Most of which are wear and tear items. You can hardly blame the car on a battery and exhaust - both of which I bet have nothing to do with Volvo at this age.

I know, but the fact that all of this happened in one go was a bit of a pain, especially when your battery goes and when you stop you cant start again, then your phone battery dies and your left in the derbyshire hills miles from anywhere, saved by a little old lady in her micra!!!!

Haha, I'm feeling a bit bummed out really, I'll get over it and get the old thing going again soon enough with parts from the scrappy, then you never know she might even get vinyled up.

Sorry for a useless thread I was just venting steam and threatening the car with the breakers if it didnt behave!!

it`s the season of box changin`, tra lalalalalaa
So, my problem began this summer, on a contryside road, with me being stranded on a pile of wet grass and the earth beneath it. Some folks pushed me off that #&% area, but as i was triging to get out ( i can`t remember if i was in reverse or first gear) i heard a bang from the back of the card (not loud, just a mild bang). Ok, after few miles i went on a national road and voila: over 60km/h my gearbox started to be noisy (not whining, and i had the feeeling that something is loosed inside it). Ok, i replaced the diff with a spare (from my ex 360 gle 1984), but i did not put a papergasket between the box casing and the diff- I KNOW I`M STUPID. I KNOW. For the next 200 km it was better, althought not 100 % (i could still hear some noises from inside of the gearbox, not the diff). After that, all started to whine in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. Last night as i was smoking outside the car (the engine was on idle and warming up) i noticed something new: a sound like when you turn a chain inside a bucket. If i fully press the clutch, all is silence (first i thought is the exhaust pipe touching the leaf spring)
Now, my question is: can i rely on the car for a 200 km trip this weekend (no more than 80 km/h, i promise)? Cand i use a box from 240, 740 series? I have found these for sale: 740 D 1985- M45 box
740 D24T- M46 overdrive box
:?

So half of my journey is done (120 km),I drove with a max speed around 80 km/h. Two nights ago i *ve checked the transmission oil inside the box- it*s like a metal liquid soup inside...anyway, in the meanwhile I have a question: what about a diesel 340 box? Does it fit my diff on it, and my propeller shaft? Almost it doesn't matter what gear ratios will result :)

Diesel (D16 engine) 340 box is like a B14/B172 driveline. Rubber bonded prop, not torque tube.

I knew that Mac :) but I was wondering if it`s possible to remove the front cover of a diesel box- so all that remains is the drive shaft "naked". Oh, I did a double check under the car, and it seems that I DID PUT a thin paper/cartboard like gasket between gear box and diff. :360:
Many thanks.
