340 1.7 Ereg 1987 carb ID help?

Hello Maniacs
er I'm new & arguably volvo illiterate but I was directed here from the volvo club site & I need help! Also (!) I need help with my never-let-me down 340 1.7 1987 E reg!
Couldn't get it through the MOT on emissions; my mechanic said that he thought the carb was worn because it was bringing in petrol into one of the barrels when it shouldn't have been, on idling.
I only have to do £75 worth of welding besides to get it through so I desperately want to keep the car.
My primary question is:
can anyone identify the carb for me? are there some id numbers on it somewhere?
my mechanic said it was a Solex twin barrel.
I need the info so that I know which carb to follow in the Haynes / which carb I need to source in scrap yards etc.
Can anyone help with this?
I was also told that I could use a carb off the 440 as it was a direct bolt on / the same I guess....any comments on this?
A secondary question is:
any ideas on volvo breakers in either LOndon or Coventry area?
I only know Braydon garage in Hackney, London - but they don't have any 340s or 440s at the moment....
Any help would be greatly appreciated as the car is currently sorned & I'm having to bike it & coach it around.....I'm getting really fit but I need to bring a fridge to the tip, move a table, loads of books and, you know generally get my wheels sorted!

Cheers guys (you really are all mad, but hugely knowledgeable I must say!)

If you can stomach a trip to Derby, I can tell you for a fact that there are 4+ 340 1.7s in Albert Looms'.

cheers

James

thanks guys!

Dear Schakal & James
thank you very much for the replies to my post. I had an inkling that it could be the solex 28 34 z10 but I wasn't sure at all....I'll check out the refurb kit....do you reckon an amateur can use the refurb kit OK?....I'm a kind of general maintainance guy but I've done a water pump & an alternator in my time but nothing too major apart from that, although I've already removed the carb & thought that was really easy!
Thanks for the Derby tip off James..I did a huge search last night & found a few definite Volvo scrap yards so I also have a few to phone.....I'd love to go to Derby ! (well I'm easily pleased, I'm from Coventry!!) but I ain't got a motor innit!! just my luck - when I need a car part my car's sorned!! And it was going so well as well even if I may have been pumping out the fumes. I think a cycle ride to Derby is out of the question as well but maybe I can bribe a mate to give me a lift!
thanks again...I'll post an up-date on how things go when I get my hands dirty & post a photo of my "beauty" when I figure out how to use my new mobile!

for the 'overflow' at idle there is only 1 ultimate solution; buy a new float (inside carburettor) at a Volvo or Renault dealership.

Do you get a smell of hydrocarbons in the car when left for a while - especially after a run?

It could well be that the float is OK but the cut-off flange has become bent so the float is not properly shutting theinlet valve. Carefully removing the Carb top. Upturn the head and prise open the flange a mm or so (Check Haines) and replace. If you check the carb (With air cleaner off) before doing this and look into the 2nd venturi and you notice overflow/seeping, a new gasket will be required as well. The difference will be amazing!

That's the problem that I had. Even 'spare' carb may need new top gasket.

when in doubt you can weigh the float on a sensitive letter scale; it should be 5-7 (=6) grammes.

the foam plastic tends to absorb fuel, so it does not float correctly anymore. check my old V3C topic on this:

http://www.volvo300club.nl/discus/messages/26/2680.html

If the weight is still OK, it will float like the left one (new), so some adjustment would do the trick then.

the renault part number is 77.01.031.047

think it will be named 'float kit' in english?

i would also be intersted with the outcome if you do a refurb on the carb mate.
having problems with my carb as well ,need to sort it out soon

Many thanks fellas

Thank you chaps for all the advice. I'll definitely look into the float & flange issues. I think I'll pretty much take it apart a bit & see what I can see & get this re-furb kit if I don't find a good-looking second -hand carb somewhere soon. I'm stuck in London at the minute & the car's in Coventry so it'll be a couple of weeks before I can give any feedback on what I'm doing.
I've got to get my hands dirty & do some searching by web & phone!
Till then may all your journies be smooth, safe & Volvo-powered!
regards

i have just got a volvo 340 1.7 solex 28 34 z10 carb through the post from ebay and it looks in pretty good nick . but when compared to my other solex from the renault 9 there are differences .
there is a idle cut solenoid on the volvo one and there is not one on the renault one

any ideas how compatible these 2 carburettors are ?? i mean the jet sizes and all that stuff that affects the performance of the engine ???

can i basicly tidy the volvo carb up and stick on my renault 9 or do i have to swap over some of the parts from the renault carb to the volvo one ?

:? crikey Schakal, you're way ahead of me - I have no idea - maybe one of the tech heads can help?....I should be able to start some work on my carb this weekend so if I think I learn anything I'll let you know although your renault / volvo dilemma sounds slightly unique. Is there any chance that you could garner any useful info from any Renualt dealer workshop? or maybe post a new one....there must be someone with knowledge of Renault / volvo tie-up?
hope you can make some progress, good luck!
Volvopandy :)

You'll need to wire +12v constant to that solenoid, and swap the jets from the Renault carb...assuming the venturis are the same size.

don't start with swapping the jets,

just stick it on and try it out. (12 volt is needed)

I can't say I agree there Wouter. Given that the Renault-spec engine almost certainly has a different cam at the very least, and assuming the venturis are the same size, why would you suggest keeping the Volvo-spec jets?

cheers

James
