Volvo genuine drive belts for cvt

Post by dafdaffer » 28 Aug 2006 12:05 pm

Hi does anyone know where i can purchase genuine volvo cvt belts from as the last set of Roflex-Vari belts that i brought killed the transmission on my daf 66 coupe as they are slightly wider, plus they sound awful in the morning! my 340 is also in need of new belts ,

kind regards

paul

Hello and welcome! I'm actually in need of finding some genuine belts as well. I have a set of belts for a DAF part number A528886 DAF 25 which were believed to be for a Volvo 340, but sadly they weren't when we'd removed the old ones and had them along side one another to compare!

So, I've been told GSF (I think) have a deal on belts, but apparently the non genuine Volvo ones can be noisy and wear quicker. If you happen to come across a source of genuine Volvo belts, please let me know! There were a set on Ebay recently, which went rather cheaply, if only I'd known the ones I had didn't fit then, or I'd have bought them.

Anyway, maybe you'd like to post some picture of your car and some info. It seems as though you are a fan of the variomatics!

HI i will get some pictures of the volvo and post them on, its in the garage at the moment .

thanks for your reply,

we have alot of volvo 340's broken in a car breakers near me, i just missed a variomatic as i was waiting for the weather to get better and they crushed it, normally one in one out there are a couple of 1.7's in at the moment and a 360 (well there was last week) the breakers is in Derby so if anyone needs anything or would like to know whats in then i will post it on here, its not a breakers where they stack them but as all new legistations permit breakers to operate then you have to be quick as they drain ALL the fluids from the cars, you can walk around freely and take off what you want without hinderance and very very cheap as well as they recycle metal they dont really need the money for the parts like most other breakers to keep going, there are nomally inxs of 1000 cars in at all times

Drive belts, Drive belts, Drive belts.

Ok - situation today is :-

CVT Drive Belts (pair) Volvo part no.3266545.

Still available from factory (4day del.to dealers) at a price of - wait for it - wait for it (deep breath) £166.50 - v.a.t. ! (According to my local stealer in Ipswich).

Euro Car Parts - no longer stocked (almost all 300 stuff dropped).

GS & F - Still stocked at present pt.no.V19680 - 65.00 + v.a.t. for a pair.

Nordic - Not stocked.

Mac.

Brookhouse Volvo (01473 218806) - I pair left in stock at 64.50 + v.a.t. But they promise to contact their supplier in Sweden to see what supply situation is. (wouldn't hurt to give them a ring - they are top notch for most things).

The only source for genuine factory belts is the dealer (always has been) or if someone has a set 'lying around'.

From past experience, factory belts tend to be the most quiet but aftermarket belts tend to last a little longer but are a little 'harsher'.
So many factors effect belt life/noise though there is probably not a lot in it.

Interesting stuff, top work Mac. I'd still be inclined to go with the genuine Volvo route tbh, despite the cost. The belts can be heard anyway....... so if aftermarket belts are noisier, I'd rather not have them!

I'm hoping to see if I can swap my incorrect belts for a set of Volvo 340 belts, or do a deal with someone.

the aftermarket (Roulunds Vari-Flex from Denmark) belts are actually smoother and softer than the originals.

but thats exactly the reason why they 'stick' a little to the pulleys when they are still cold, giving the awful noises !!

it should be noted that once the car has driven a few hundred yards, the creaking and crunching noises go away and from then on the belts are just as quiet as the Goodyear (volvo) ones.

they dó last longer. but most people only need to change them once, whichever brand they choose.

the Dafhobby boys from Born (town very near the original factory) have some contacts with a Japanese belts manufacturer. They can supply belts with Kevlar reinforcement strands in them, which are less noisy then the Danish belts and even stronger as well. I'm not updated on their current price, though...

Hello Paul

A very interesting thread! You kept that coupe quiet! Saw a picture of it next to Pedro's coupe! Looks very nice and I'm orange with envy!

Have just acquired a 1980 round-nosed 343 Variomatic which spent most of its life in S Africa. MoT'd last week and I hope to have it on the road tomorrow. Have got some intermittent idling problems but hope to sort them; maybe an intermittent air leak. The tester tweaked the CO and HC for me.

I've got Roflex belts on the D66 and have not had the creaking and groaning, but it seems as though I escaped lightly. A Dutchman once said to me that when the car has been standing for a few weeks, as you drive off it sounds as though the Vario should be on the floor in bits behind the car! Have yet to inspect the belts on the 343 which are probably Volvo; there's an empty Volvo belt bag in the boot. I'm sure the DOC belts are Roflex.

Hopefully might see you at the Daf Autumn Frolic (DAF!) at Lower Stondon (Bedfordshire off the A1 near Henlow) on Sunday 24 Sept. I should be in the Volvo with luck!

Regards

Alex D

I'd go with that too. I'll be looking for a 'mk1' 343 in a few months time, if anyone knows where I can find one.

cheers

Wow hello Alex, so nice to hear from you, i lost your email adress along time ago and i wanted to thank you for that book that you sent me, i have been looking for an early 343 myself there is one on ebay at the moment but it is the facelift one and a manual, and as you know i have bit of a soft spot for the old variomatic's,

i was given the chance of one in sheffield (Tim Gow) a couple of years ago but had to decline as her indoors said that i had enough already (only 3 dafs) he was going to scrap it but it was in mint condition and i never knew what happened to it?

if you can alex post a few of the pictures on here of you 343 we would love to see them

they all seem a very nice bunch on here and they all know there stuff and hopefully if i get my 1987 volvo 340 sorted we could meet up?
pictures to follow as soon as i dig the car out of the garage

kind regards

paul
