It`s dead simple. Do it cold as per the actual Volvo owners manual .15mm in, .20mm ex. Rule of 9, dab of tippex on each one when it`s done so you don`t forget which ones you`ve already adjusted, clean it off before you put the rocker cover back. New gasket if the old one looks at all wobbly

Job done

PS

I don`t know if you`ve done this before so forgive me if it sounds patronising but taking the plugs out first makes life a lot easier too.

As does remembering to put them in again BEFORE you try and start it. (and thats the voice of experience :? !! )

"i personally left the plugs in, cos i felt that i'd forget which lead went where if i didnt "

It`s a LOT easier with the plugs out - you`re not fighting compression and you can position the engine much more accurately

That`s another place where the Tippex comes in handy Hugh - just mark the leads with dots.

Always got some in my toolbox - good for timing marks, putting dizzys back on the right way round, marking wheel studs so the wheel goes back on the same etc. etc. Easy to wipe of when your done as well.

was goin to do my valve clerences on saturday morning so i waited for the car to go cold.
took the rocker cover off cheaked my valve clerences before tampering and found they were all spot on!!
wich leaves me with the anoying rattle still there and nothing i can do about (by that i mean i cant fix it personaly)
i know that shes 14 year old and old cars tend to pick up a ratttle here and there but she used to be whisper quiet

i would like to swap her for one of the better models but she just passed her mot and i have to tax her at end of month so it would be a shame to get rid

i want more power!!!

Hello, I have adjusted the tappets a few times on a 1.4 and its worth remembering that if its a very high mileage car there will be wear in the rocker arms where they hit the push rods. When you use a feeler guage its difficult to compensate for this wear i.e. you can set the valve clearances to exactly what the manual says and they will still clack. You can get round this by setting the the clearances to say 3/4 of the recommended values, if your engine has done more than 150k.

On the 1.7 its a different story because the only way to adjust the valve clearances is to insert metal shims. My mate had one of these and it was always a bit of clacker even with new shims in.

I think I might try an oil change and use synthetic oil as it seems to stick to engine parts better and should therefore be better while the engine is cold
