Re: Oil pressure and temp gauge

Hi all.
I have a B200 engine, a temp gauge from a Volvo 240 and a water temp sender from a B19 engine (standard one which is connected to the dash clock). I found out that above the oil filter is a plug with the same thread as my sender. Okay, so i`ve tried to conect all of them like so: the upside T sign from the clock to earth, + on the batt and the G sign onto the sender wire. But the needle is going straight to 150 * C (end of the scale).
Why, because i think that the sender it does not have only two position like let`s the oil pressure switch, her signal gradually goes up or down depending of the water temp.
What can i do?

The gauge will go to 150 degrees if the G wire is grounded...so I'm guessing that the sender is not suitable for the gauge. Was the B19 from a 360, and if so did it have Smiths (8000rpm) or VDO (7000rpm) gauges?

cheers

Yes, the sender comes from a 360 B19 with Smiths dash clocks(made in UK). Both the sender and the clock are VDO.
So i have to find another sender, right? :(

You need a 'nipple' from a 940 turbo on the inlet manifold, very common so I'd just pull one from a 940 in the scrapyard, and swap it for one of the 'blanks' in the 360 injection manifold

Just check the size once you've removed it - one of the ones for the breather system is only pin-hole sized on the inside. It looks normal once installed. Guess who found that one out the hard way (dump valve not triggering on 740 Turbo)!

Alf - I don't know, but I suspect the sender is the problem. VDO temp senders tend to read 10-180 ohms, so you could try measuring your sender? I can't remember exactly, but disconnecting the 'G' wire either pegs the gauge up or down, and grounding the 'G' wire does the opposite. If disconnecting it pegs it 'up', I'd suggest the connection to the sender (or the sender's connection to ground) is bad.

This setup works just fine!
It was a poor ground which caused me this problem, not the sender itself.
Thank you. sm4
