I thought they were square. I got mine off with a 3/8ths ratchet.

Buy a complete sump and swap that. Or get a picture of the plug and post it up here. You can buy a socket for ANY type of fastener.

Sounds like it's time to wedge summit in hope it bites and use ratchet/moleys to get the mother off

Security sump plug?! Hehe! Are you sure it's only 5 points? That is really, really odd. 6 points (Torx) would be less wierd...although still unusual.

I guess oil prices are rising, but I've not heard of anyone stealing oil before...
That would be nasty, if you started the engine without realising
How long have you owned the car? If it's some kind of security thing you'd have to contact the previous owners. Have you had the oil done by a garage before? They would have needed the right tool...

Doubt it's a security thing. But it has an almost full volvo history, so i'm saying that you guys all have replacement sump plugs and mine's original!
I'll take a picture when i get a chance. English weather and work permitting.

I was kidding about it being a security feature

Having said that, it's a curious story. Every other 300 I've seen has a 3/8" square hole in it.

Leading on from this, has anyone got a spare sump plug or know where to get one from. Halfords says they can't get one.

Try a local motor factors. Take the old one along, if you can. All you need is something of the right size & thread.

Had to replace rear brake cylinder components last weekend.
It's going to be fooked when it comes out which is why i'm sourcing one before getting it out.
