LSD/driveline upgrades theory
LSD/driveline upgrades theory
Hi dudes!
I have been in talk with some diff companies in australia to make a custom centre in the existing housing, job would take 6 months, price, well the equivalent of 1000 pounds!!! Not impressed, but it is PPG, the gearbox and diff specialists down under.
Anyway, I was down at Swedish Salvage in Adelaide (Volvo spares place) and asked him whether a diff could be adapted to suit. We proceeded to have a massive argument with me about the availability of gear, I said it could be done, he said you would have to move the gearbox to the front and have 760 IRS at the back to do it properly. He didn't know anything about the 360 aftermarket bits, but he did say that even if you did have an LSD, the power of a turbo engine would still destroy the driveline as the crown and pinion (I hope I got that right) that connects the prop to gearbox to diff is too small/weak and would fail as soon as the clutch was dropped (not that I drive like that). He also said that since the gearbox was on it's side, so the gears work in oil so the shift would always be slow and sloppy.
Has anyone looked into upgrading the bits he's talking about, I know Recoprop do an upgraded prop, and I can get an LSD from Quaife, but what else should be upgraded at the same time??
Are there any other cars with a similar setup that we could make a hybrid setup out of???

This is becoming more and more important. There's now probably enough demand for a company to make plenty of money out of strengthened driveline stuff for 300s. You can only get a quaife if you have 9 friends who are all willing to pay 600quid each. Plus the drifters don't like them, and they're pretty much the market for 300 bits.

From what I've heard (talking to some autotest guys a while back), the 600 quid quaiffes arn't worth thinking about, thing is, the guy never really explained himself, so I'm dubious about the info. Something worth looking into first though.

Porsche 944 and 928 both have transaxle gearboxes, and both had LSD's available although manual 928's are rare at the best of times. These can happily take in excess of 300hp.
Alfa 75 also had a transaxle - don't know if an LSD was an option, but given the pedigree I expect so. Alfa gearboxes need to be treated with respect to last.
All these LSD units would be fast road spec, not dorifto... Drifters would be better off with airlockers, I reckon. "On" for the track, "Off" for the road. I'm much more interested in a less aggressive fast road type to be honest.

I just accepted the quaife rumours, assuming they'd want a minimum run to justify manufacturing a new product, and 600quid is about the right money for the market leading ATB. It might be worth ringing a few companies to see if they'd knock some up. I'll also be sending a spare transaxle to a rallycross garage in Cambs to see what my mate thinks.
As for using bits from other cars, anything can be made to fit. Does anyone know any dimensions for boxes and diffs they think might fit? It's time to start measuring things up and gathering all our ideas together here.

Thanks for the replies guys! I have looked into the 75 option and there is a readily available supply of LSD's and gearboxs and upgraded crown wheels/pinions available. There is a guy on an australian performance forum running 224kW through a turbo 6 cylinder alfa engine and he does regular trackwork. Could we mate the de dion tubes to the alfa box or use the entire 75 rear axle setup?? It looks to have a differet mounting system too.

Sounds like it's up to the job then! Alfa 75 also has inboard brakes, but I'm sure these could be deleted. There's a Finnish boy on here using custom g/boxes by making up a spaceframe to hold it, and then attaching the frame to the V300 fixing points and torque tube:
