Oil filter thread

Post by gltux » 07 Aug 2008 03:11 pm

Hello,
I've been working on my 360, done two of the tyres and I've come to replacing the oil filter.
The parts place said they have two for 87 360s that are different threads, one was 20T or something and the other was a "U" something.
Can anyone tell me which one it is or is it a case of seeing what's already on the car?
Adam

I think you've been given duff information. There is only one type of oil filter for the 360, it's the same across the redblock range. The other one is probably for the 340

Not just across the redblock range. It is the same filter from the OHV redblock on a 140/160 right through to the whiteblocks in S40s etc at least up to 1999.
I believe a Saab filter fits right on too.

Thread is 3/4 UNF on all redblock engines.

I think you're right about the duff information. I bought some HT cables from them for a "Volvo 360" and they were the wrong length.
Sorry for being thick but what's a redblock?
Thanks for your replies so far. I'll go there again today and see if one of them is the UNF one.

Main part of the engine is called the "block" and it's painted red.

I believe it was also first called a red block because it was made of cast iron also.

I have a Volvo oil filter here which has this text on it:

"All Volvo cars 1962 onwards
Excl. Diesel & 340 B14 1985 onwards".

I guess that info is outdated by now, but you get the idea that it fitted a fair few cars in its day ...

<edit>It also says "Made in Germany 06 02" on the filter. So I guess the the model text applied at least up to then ... </edit>

Make sure you get either a genuine Volvo filter, or a Mann filter (OEM manufacturer I believe), these contain the anti return valve inside, so the oil won't drain back down to the sump. Andy will back me up in saying other certain well known makes are rubbish, they appear to have no anti return valve and even after 10 mins of running the car the filter was practically empty!

It would be more helpful for us if it said

"All Volvo cars 1962 onwards
Excl. Diesel & 340 B14 1985 onwards AND B17 1985 onwards"

Cheers mickt

Ah well. The one I got is a Mahle OC 23 "micro star" one.
I think they one had that type in stock.
