Alternate Radiator Cooling Fan

Hi All!
The reason I ask the following because my 16v keeps hitting the back of the motor on the fan and causing the fan to put a smiley face in my radiator fins
Does anyone know if there is a difference between the cooling fans (inc. Motor) between a 1.4 and a 1.7?
Putting a fan in front of the radiator would be the best solution but i refuse to pay Kenlowe prices! anyone got any ideas for a suitable replacement?

Citreon BX's, can't remember which models, but at least some of them have a pair of front mounts and the cowling that looks about the right size.

some pugs have twin elec fans aswell as the cireons as stated, look about the right size too. we'll be taking our single elec off and putting the twin fans on soon.....

Its a genuine volvo radiator, even more annoying because its only a few years old.
The fan was OK but it has been hit by the engine at some point thus pushing it forward.
Thats a good point! the pug 205 Turbo diesel (and maybe non turbo) had twin fans, on the front of the rad, definatley worth looking into i think, I will let you all know how i get on.

RE: electrics
you can probably get this as a kit anyway, but for those that are currently running a viscous fan, and want electric:
you'll need a rad with a stat hole in it, and a stat. then i used an electric window relay from a BMW (not that it matters) to switch the fan (or you'll just overload your stat, it happened to mine, had to buy a new one.
THEN (clever bit) you get an overrun timer from those door entry systems where they buzz you in with the door lock. these can be set from 3secs to 3 mins, and allow the fan to stay on for a while longer. They run off 12v supplies.
Otherwise, which is currently happening in mine, you get on-off-on-off-on-off with the fans while sitting in traffic. with the over run, it cools slightly more than you need, and doenst have to come back on for a bit longer.
Thats what im doing to mine, eventually, and this timer thing costs about £20 or so. a few quids for the relay. Just a thought, might work out nice and cheap for some people. especially if, like me, you pinched it from where you work

Get a blowing fan, and put it in front of the rad. Easy job...!
Some other nice option is looknig at some fans of a BMW 520. This is a dubbel fan, and is a lot "thinner" than a volvo one...
Lots of drifters use these...

Did you move the fan over to the next holes in the front panel when you did the swap? The threaded inserts pull out and clip in the next holes. Fans are same 1.4 to 1.7.

Not sure how much extra room that would give becuase i have all the cambelt covers on,
i bought a cheapo slimline fan that arrived yesterday, just need to fit it with the volvo plug and fit it.
Anyone know were i can get a univeral fitting kit, the ones that work in a simular way to cable ties?

You don't need to get one of those door thinges to set the time the fan runs for, you can make your own fairly simply with a 555 timer chip, and a few electronic bits (a couple resistors and potentiometers). Should only cost a couple pounds.
Do a search to find a circuit diagram for a monostable circuit and the bits you'll need.

still more expensive than £0
but yeah, its just a timer. handy as its adjustable from 3 sec to 3 min and on a PCB with ready and waiting screw terminals. same difference

eh? you have lost me now,
Im going from one electric fan to another. shouldn't be any need for any extra wiring. Just going to solder the plug from the volvo one to my new slimline fan.

oh right, sorry i got the wrong end of the stick - thought you were changing from viscous fan to electric, but yours had electric anyway..
ignore me, i need to learn to read posts properly first lol
