hello fellow ovlov guys and gals

just a quick question, i own a 87 360glt, and i am having a real head bang with it at the moment, here it goes . . . . . . . i parked up one night to go and play with fireworks, when i came back to the car, it wouldnt start, cudnt hear the fuel pump, so i chopped that out for a new one, worked, but only with the air flow meter off, and as you can imagine it ran like crap, and when i plugged it in the car would idle ok and then die after circa 5 seconds, then thought it was the AFM so had one lying around in the garage chopped that out and then put the original fuel pump back in as i tested it and it worked, but still no fuel pump, looked up in the haynes bible and it said about the control relay, so i went to the scrappy and found one, no burnt smell, so i thought happy days, i put it in, car started and ran like a dream, i went to go and pick a friend up and it was a bit slippy on the road so i thought id put a bit more air in my tires and have a bit of fun, so i swithed off the car, filled the tyres up, went to start it and nothing . . . . . . . my old man sourced a brand new relay, put it in and the fuel pump didnt make a wirring noise as they usually do, so got towed home, and then began persueing the problem, my brother has tested the pump again, and all systems ok on that front, swapped out the AFM again and still nothing, relay isnt burnt out, found a secondary fuse box hidden behind the battery and it contains 2 8A fueses, both seem to be fine, but when testing there is power going into the fuse, but not out of it, and when the fuel pump is jacked into the battery it wirrs and then when i start it, it starts and then dies, but i removed the AFM plug just to get it running so i could get it on my drive and it wouldnt start, i need a miricle to get it started otherwise i will have to chop it in and i dont really want to do that, so i am extending my reaches into the vast vast knowledge on this website to see if any of you guys could help me with suggestions,

thank you very muh for reading my short (sorry i waffled on a bit) question

Hi, I think I've understood it correctly, if so, the car turns over but won't run? I'd imagine in changing and playing with the other things you've got a couple of sperate issues now, but originally I'd go for it being the auxillary fusebox behind the battery that you have found. Although the fuses normally look ok, the connections corrode or even the spade connections onto the box. This gives similar problems, one minute it's fine, then nothing, it can be disturbed by a bump, stopping, anything!

There is another possibility if it really isn't this after a good clean up and checking all connections, but if you've found a problem there with the power not coming out of the fuse box, there is the problem! The other option is coming off of the positive terminal on the battery is a balck plastic cover on the positive wire a couple of inches along, where two more wires plug in on spade connectors, these may come loose, get corroded or pulled out, give them a clean and make sure they are pushed home. That can give similar very annoying symptoms.

I'd put everything else back as it was before, otherwise you've got too many variables to play with! The relay is another possibility, but if the original one worked fine and with that in place it is the fuse box behind the battery, then you're sorted! Just to be sure, does the needle on the rev gauge flicker ever so slightly as your cranking it over on the starter motor? From memory this proves it's getting a signal form the renix unit.

Hope that helps.
