Gearbox swap

Post by Chris_C » 17 Nov 2008 09:52 pm

How easy is it to change an M45 for an M47? Basically, is it going to be a straight swap if I want a mk1 5sp?

If there was sunshine, moonlight and romance.Things would be good.

As it is there may be trouble ahead.......

M47 is related to M45 but if I remember correctly had tail extension to house 5th gear.
As diff bolts to rear of the box any increase in overall length of the box will give alignment problems......
But hey, what would I know, ask Mac,he'll know for sure.

Yeah, I'm quitely sat here hoping a 5sp prop and box will do the trick, but I think you could well be right...

I think you are also right in the asking of Mac :D

think if you fit box and diff together then you may be ok, the 4 spd has a longer diff casing, 5spd shorter to counter the 5th gear extension. not 100% sure about the A. d/shafts, you may need to fit or remove adaptors depending or B. the prop, t/tube situation
couldn't think of a better way to spend a cold sunday
somebody herre must have done this swap surely........

The gearbox is longer, shaft is the same size. The tip of the clutchhousing (bellhouse?) is different sometimes.

From what I remeber the eary 4 speed cars have a coarse sline prop and then later 5 speed cars have the common fine spline. If that is teh case you will also need to swap the bellhousing

John, Varts was an M47 before the swap, not an M45 as a mk1 would have which is where my thinking started. I've never actually seen an M45.

Paul/Dai, thats awesome news.... though parents arn't going to be impressed when I tell them the B14 has to stay on the drive a bit longer to rescue my old bellhousing

Just to reitterate, straight swap and props are supposed to be the same too (but interesting point what Dai said), so may not be the case with early/late models.

EDIT: What have you found?! ;)

Nothing yet, and I don't have the pennies, but I want a mk1, and I have a spare gearbox or 2 in the long run (I've 2 here to replace the current 2) so working out if it's worth sorting one out. I really want a 343.

Oh I see. Sounds like a good excuse to swap the engine at the same time

I like that car in a "historic" sense (rarity value!), but personally I prefer a Mk1 to be a bit more Volvolike - i.e. with a manual gearbox and the '78 on dash. A '78 / '79 manual in a mad colour would be perfect ... Or an '81 S-Version - the redblock would make up for the less funky exterior ...

If you're a big DAF fan, obviously you'd see that exactly the other way round ;-)
