Post by Bazboy » 14 Mar 2009 08:03 pm

hey guys
I remember seeing in a pic for a r sport cam upgrade for the b14, now im guessing these are rare as hens teeth, but it got me wondering if there are any other possible cam upgrades which can be gotten for the b14? as im just trying to liven it up a bit while i build my ncb.

cheers dan.

They are rare, also a pain in the backside to do, remember that the cam on a B14 is down low in the block, not in the head!

Ahhh, is the gain worth the strain lol, or should i just wait for my ncb to build and then shove in a valver? Also what about cams from other cars such as the renault 5's?

Cheers Dan

Depends on your definition of worth it. To get quick power, no. To prove a point and make a 100+bhp 1.4, of course it is!

First step have you done the basics such as exhaust , making sure the carb is a1 and possib;ly even considered a carb upgrade?

I would love to get the 1.4 running sweet, as id would ideally like to keep the original engine rather then go the valver route, cause it would be different.

I have replaced my carb with another standard one and initially it was great but i attempted to tune it and its been lumpy ever since :) , i would do a carb upgrade, but what types are available and which ones are best to use on a b14?

I have done an exhaust back section but not the whole thing as i dont have the cash atm, just looking for ideas when i finally get a some spare cash.

Dan the man with the plan. :D
Im looking at the same route man. Ditched the valver option for the meanwhile so I'd be very interested to see how you get on dude.
My carb seems to be set up well (Pops did full a service on it) but its still drinking like a scotsman on a stag do. And the powers are week. So very weak.
Dai, have you got anything in stock as a direct replacement? well, upgrade i suppose really.
Anyone have any ideas if a exhaust upgrade on 1.4 is worth the dollar for the hollar?
I know its not going to make the moose a flying machine, but is there a big difference in overall power for the money?

Cheers Dan, and Dai. and everyone else!

I have a carb from when my grey car was a 1.4 and i modded it to fit a twin accelerator jet. It went very well and would just go straight on yours and should be set up. I also have a spare engine if you are after a head to port and a cam to send for a regrind if you are interested?

Hey Adam, I would definitely be interested in the carb, How much would you be after for it?

If you're a bit broke, then don't put money into a car for only a mild improvement - just get the carb back in tune (though it wasn't long ago when chris and I had it running really nicely iirc)... face it, the 1.4 will never be a powerhouse and unless you have the pennies then trying to create a power-build 1.4 is a bad idea. I hate to shoot ideas down, but take it from someone who drives a more performance oriented small engine (factory 101bhp from a 1294cc in my 106 rallye) they are fussy and not that great to drive around town and thats ignoring the very regular service intervals of such a revvy engine. It all adds up very quickly and I'd recommend saving up until you have a sufficient amount of money to decide on a tuning path and hopefully see it through to completion. I hate to say it, but it doesn't get cheaper than a 16v conversion!

I can see what your saying jason, im not planning a power build 1.4 lol The carb which you and chris tuned was the old one since then i put a newer one on, because the old fell apart, which was working fine till i touched it  I ideally want to keep the engine and the car together for a while, or at least until i have enough no claims to afford an engine swap.

So until then im just looking for cheap things to do to the 1.4 to make the car a bit more fun and also mainly to help me learn more about how everything works, so when i can afford an engine conversion i have some idea of what im doing :D

Cheers Dan

good to have a devils advocate perspective.
dvla sign-offs on engine changes have gone mental though.
unless the works done by an approved garage, and signed off as such, they wont change the logbook.
if you ignore that, then youre effectivley uninsured.

as i understand the new regulations anyway.
