Engine stall (B14 340 1984)

Post by Tero Huikko » 05 Sep 2009 03:01 pm

Little help...My friend has a 340DL variomatic and it has recently developed stalling problems.

After high revs it stalls almost every time.
It has a recently replaced engine and this stalling occured with old engine too. This is why I'm a little baffled over this now.

The whole engine is replaced with carb too. Old stuff is renix, flywheel, distributor, HT leads and plugs.
Any ideas?

I told him that he has a carb problem but it's lot likely to have to engines with 100% same carb problem.
The "new" engine in the car is from 1981 model.

have you replaced the clutch along with the engine or used the old one?

my best guess is that the clutch plate doesn't slide along it's axle or gets stuck.

I used the old one. This same problem was with the old engine and same clutch.

does it stall too after reving high in neutral?

if not; i'd say clutch, in that case you need to get the tailpiece of the clutchhousing, use a steelwire brush on the splines and use a very minimal amount of grease on the splines

what spec is the engine? b14.2 (81)

what carb is on that, 83 or 93?
what type of ignition are you currently using then; the renix or the old type?

it could potentially be a blocked return petrol hose; after reving the engine the petrol gets pumped constantly into the carb with enough force to push the floater down and drowning the engine when it wants to run stationary.

there aren't that many other possibility's if you've swapped the engine to find the same symptons i think..

B14.2 (1981), renix and distributor is from the 1984 engine.
Carb is original one from 1981 engine.

Symptoms are exactly same that before the engine swap.
Engine had to be swapped due to cracked cylinder tube and head

I agree, fuel filter blocked, fuel line blocked, or replacement air is not getting into fuel tank.

Take testdrive without fuel filler cap, does it help? If so, then it is not getting enough replacement air to fuel tank, but I don't believe it is this one, usually this one causes symptoms at all revs.

Blow air trough fuel lines, make someone listen near filler pipe area that there are sound of air blurping from fuel tank (fuel cap need to be removed naturally).

Fuel filter is easy to replace and is very cheap.

It could be also float level, but if blowing air (prefferrably with compressor) trough fuel lines does not reveal anything, then it might be time to check float level and other stuff with carb, but I would not touch carb before that, especially when you have different carb in question and symptoms remain same.

Carb is original one from 1981 engine.
there we go..

the engine cannot run properly with this setup;

you need to use the carb + manifolds from the 84 engine with that renix. and since it is a b14.2 it has the soft valve seats so you nead to put a lead additive in the fuel.

you can also use the carb + manifolds from the 81 engine; but in that case you'll need to wire up that distributer too.

however; this above is for making the engine perform properly and be economic if needed, won't be the reason it's stalling but you'll need to setup that properly too.

Ah...that too. What makes this combination not good?

As I said it's not my car. Now I have something to start with and I'll try to help him out.
I'm considered some sort of variomatic guru around here but these B14 engines are not my strongest area.

the original 84 engine can have a b14.3 of a b14.4 engine, both can be with the renix;

problem with the b14.3 engine is that this is a equipped with a single barrel solex carb; if this is the case and you use the 81 engine dual barrel weber you can compare it with the result if the ignition will act too retarded,

if the 84er has a b14.4 engine this uses a specific setup with renix and carb jets; this setup is different from the carb off the '81 car wich makes the combination of the two a untested and potentially dangerous (running lean) setup

i suggest that besides that you take a look at the fuel lines off the car; i would almost dare a bet that there's something wrong in that region

holymoly...What would you say if I told you that the original 1984 engine had dual barrel weber too?

Carbs look the same. I have to check out the númbers.
Seems like I had it right at first when I told him to repair the old engine instead of using one I had sitting in the attic for centuries :P

i know:

b14.4 is allways equipped with the dual barrel weber; i just didn't type that along in the process

the number on the 81 engine's carb will probably be 83 of 93; on the 84 engine's carb it will probably be 101

the numbers are a rough guess but either way the numbers will definatly be different and so the internals of the carb will be different

Where should this petrol return line be? I tried to look but there is only one hose going to the carb in both carbs.

there is only 1 hose going to the carb from the mechanical fuel pump,

the mechanical fuel pump itself has a feed and return hose, directed by the arrows on the fuel pump.

front hose is feed, rear hose is return, you can identify them clearly because after the piece of petrol hose the synflex fuel line of the return side is thinner.

you probably need to replace the petrol hoses at the mechanical fuel pump and above the fuel tank (accesible via a hatch in the boot) and blow the synflex hoses clean to make sure the dirt is out.
