Diesel Conversion
Diesel Conversion
Thinking to myself here, when I do finally get funds for an engine, should I go for powaz but with fuel efficiency? What are my options? Idealy I'd like something like a 2l TD. But also, how complicated would it be to convert to diesel? All I can think of there being a problem is telling when my glow plugs are warm, but I could always just guess there. I'm sure it really can't be that easy, am I missing some major obstacle which would render the project way too difficult?
Re: Diesel Conversion
Theres always a major obstacle... normally it's getting involved
Look into 440TD's, it's what I was going to do before I decided I'd never be able to live with myself... having to stand next to the car at the petrol station with devil fuel in hand

Re: Diesel Conversion
Its a more than possible conversion, the bottom end is an F series engine so will bolt in, you may have turbo to MC problems but never dropped one in. Loom is mega easy. And replace fuel lines etc. I am still hoping to build this conversion into a saloon funily enough.
And with the boost wound up a touch and the turbo from a laguna or lae megane should see around 140-150 BHP!!

Re: Diesel Conversion
Sweet, deffinatly going to look into this then. I used to hate diesels until my ford, then I realised that they were true workhorses that saved me monies
Would be nice to have power when I want it but money saving when I'm poor

Re: Diesel Conversion
Ai,
A good TD is a great all rounder. Think about how many miles you're doing though, and whether the cost of the conversion would be offset in fuel savings.

... and whether or not you're happy to run out of revs in the middle of an overtaking manoevre
Generally, I've got nothing against diesels (particularly their fuel consumption) but that is one "feature" which always bugs me.

Re: Diesel Conversion
Totally agree... I liked the derv BMW 325 I had but the lag when pulling out onto roundabouts and lack of revs in 2nd and 3rd became frustrating when overtaking. But then the acceleration in 5th without the need to drop a gear or two was nice...trabitom99 wrote:... and whether or not you're happy to run out of revs in the middle of an overtaking manoevreGenerally, I've got nothing against diesels (particularly their fuel consumption) but that is one "feature" which always bugs me.

Re: Diesel Conversion
I did fancy the idea of a diesel but to make it cheap enough to run you would have to use ribeana. A TD with the addition of LPG for improved burn would go quite well but it would never be the same as a petrol engine.
Think I'll be sticking to LPG for a long time yet.

Re: Diesel Conversion
It depends on driving style really. I tend to change up early, and drive fairly low-revving, but if I want more power I have no problems with changing down a gear or two, and revving as much as it takes (with warm oil). I never really saw the need for "low-down grunt", particularly if it runs out in an instant around 4000 rpm.SteveP wrote:Totally agree... That's the best compromise IMO ... Fuel economy, with a petrol engine. If I'd fitted that 10 years ago I'd have saved €€€ but now I guess it's too lateclassicswede wrote:Think I'll be sticking to LPG for a long time yet.

Re: Diesel Conversion
hi
I've also looked into this but the 400 series diesels are a different shell to the petrol models. Mod is the on the front right wing as the diesel engine 'hangs' from that mount. I think the gearbox is also held differently to the petrol models. Havent seen the D19 removed from a car but I suspect it doesnt have the same lower engine mounts as the B172/B18 family.
Would be brilliant in a 340 though. The turbo makes this quite a fast car.

Re: Diesel Conversion
Sound of 4 pot diesel is probably reason for most of road rage incidents, it is so bad.
However putting motor from 1st car of here is perhaps impossible

Who was going to put Nissan diesel in 340?

Re: Diesel Conversion
I have a 440 glt turbodiesel and it goes very well pick up is not as rapid as petrol but once the turbo is wound up a bit she moves as well as 50+mpg!. intercooler is mounted in front of near side wheel arch may be an issue?? it is a renault lump mine is around 90bhp (as out the factory). Alex
Re: Diesel Conversion
There will be problem with prop shaft - the original one wont hold that torque, and with the speed - i have 1.9 N/A diesel in 340 and max speed is 140km/h(GPS) while engine has nearly 5000rpm
car is not for highway use
-and the fuel consumption in that speed is very similar to petrol engines.

Re: Diesel Conversion
I did worry about the propshaft also, them 1.9TD's must produce over 200nm of torque?
