Are all 360glt's injection?

Post by AUTOMAN » 26 Sep 2009 09:58 pm

As the heading suggests, are all 360glt's injection?
Mine is a "C" reg, 1985 and I also have a gl of the same year, but I want to have the GLT' engine out to have it re-built and new core plugs fitted. It will be out for a while, as I also want it painted and completely overhalled, so in the meantime I have thought about putting the GL's Engine in. That way, the work that the GL needs can get done while the engine is out. I know that this seems like the long way of doing things, but it means that work can continue on both cars at the same time, and I can keep one on the road to use, as I am selling all my other cars to fund the restoration of these two. Both engines have to come out anyway. The gl because of the work needed to restore the enginbay etc and the glt because the core-plugs need to be sorted and the above work undertaken.

While everything is being re-built etc, I want to use good quality parts to replace old and normaly servicable ones. Any help locating these would help

Advice and in-expensive spares welcome.

Ian.

As I have the old eye-sight problem, what sort of engine will it be then. I see people talking about B20 and B19. Waht does this mean? Sorry if this seems like a basic question, but as I don't touch stuff like this and have not needed to know it, I am ignorent at the moment. I am hoping that I will however learn a thing or two as I go allong.

Before, all I wanted was a nice looking car that I could show and use, but this site has got me in the mind to learn about my cars from now on, even though I am a definate novice.

Please be patient with me?

Ian.

There are two engines in a UK spec 360. The change over happened some time in 1985 - before then is the B19 - the E stands for fuel injected. The later engine is the B200 which was a "low friction" unit. Both engines are very similar, both look the same but with a metal coloured rocker cover on the B19 and a black one on the B200. Both are 1986cc, both rated at about 115bhp - again the E designates fuel injection. Personally I believe a B19 gives slightly more usable power but I might be getting confused by the slightly lower weight of the Mk2 versus the Mk3 Volvo 360.

Genrally the Mk2 (with the side repeater indicators in the wings rather than in the wrap round bumpers), has the B19 and the Mk3 has a B200, but a few Mk2's have the later B200. The Mk2/Mk3 changeover was never officially designated and there are quite a few cross over models from 1984-85 which share parts between the two editions. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Both the gl and the glt have the indicators in the bumper, so I guess this would make them the B200 and B200e engines respectively, as both also have black rocker-covers.

With this established, would that probably mean that the GLT has PAS. We have not used the car yet as I have been in hospital this week and also with the core-plug problem, I have not had the engine running to establish if the steering is lighter than the gl?

Hi Ian,

Both will be B200s, but I'd guess your 360 GL is a carb-fed B200K, whereas the GLT is an injected B200E. The indicators in the bumper make it a MkIII.

What model year is your GLT? IIRC it was an option on 360s from around 1987, later (in '88 or '89?) it was fitted as standard to many UK 360s (not in other markets, unfortunately :-( ) You can easily tell whether a car has PAS without driving it just by opening the bonnet - the PAS cars have a square black PAS fluid reservoir, fitted via a Y-bracket to the LH strut mount.

Cheers

Thanks Tom. I haven't been able to look at the engine yet due to being in hospital, but as the glt is also a "C" reg 1985 car, I am guessing that it does not have Pas fitted, though I will check when I get home. Do people convert their cars to pas or don't they seem to bother? Would it be a hard job to do?

I have also noticed that the window on the tailgate reaches right to the edge except for a trim strip on my car, but on the 360 I remember from years ago and also with regard to the disscussions that I have had regarding the louvre style stipes on the glt's and getting them made, that the earlier cars had a smaller rear screen.

What are the subtle and major styling differences regarding the 360?

Ian.

Yeah 1987 was the year Tom for PAS... my E plate '87 saloon had PAS, but earlier '87 registered cars didn't (D plates).

Automan - I'm certain neither of your cars will have PAS as they're too early. The 360 PAS system is nice and it's a quicker rack, not too difficult an upgrade - you just need the pump, rack and associated pipework but I gather new parts for PAS equipped cars are scarcer.

The conversion has been done, I was thinking of it at one point, but then ended up buying a PAS car instead :-) You get used to the heavy steering on non-PAS 360s, tyre choice (and pressure) makes a difference too.

Another major "styling difference" between Mk2 and Mk3 cars is the rear screen, Mk2s (and Mk1s) had a smaller screen with rounded edges. On Mk3 GLTs the "louvre strips" were dropped.

... and lower part of the steering column, and on RHD cars a different exhaust downpipe ...

Inner track rods are extremely hard to find for PAS cars. Outer track rod ends (ball joints?) are the same as for non-PAS models.

I was of the impression that you also needed to swap the bottom cross-member to convert to PAS.

Mk3 top mounts deteriorate and lead to heavy steering - my Mk2 is still really light in the hand 25 years later and I wouldn't have it any other way. I think Dai does new top mounts to correct this. Might be easier than retro-fitting PAS.
