Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Hi there (been registered before, im on my 4th Volvo 300 now, but dont remember my old PW or even what email I used ).
What are the options for an uprated clutch for a Volvo 360? My current one is turbocharged and I want to tune it further, but the clutch seems to have other ideas!
I know the rest of the transmission isnt super strong, but I would like a clutch that could handle a fair bit of power even if the gearbox isnt too happy, like beginning with a 3 sort of power...

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Im sure people have tuned 360s before, does nobody know?
Or has someone I can contact to find out??

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
I would suggest you'll not get things off the shelf for that sort of power. I hunt round the back of performance magazines may get you somewhere, but I've heard Techniclutch mentioned more than once.

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
I think Ryan was using a combination of 740 turbo (nearly 300bhp so far) clutch and 940 diesel clutch kits, but can't remember what? Although no idea if that will work with an M4x series gearbox as his runs an M90

I think the spline patterns differ on the 740T and the 360?
Other option is an afternoon with a clutch catalogue, which is how these things normally get solved

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Nikdev runs a 240 flywheel with an uprated clutch from sachs right?
due to the 240 flywheel he did had to change his ignition system though..

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
I'm building a 360 turbo, I also do not yet have a clutch plate, I would forget about anything Volvo only 360 stuff will fit. 940 dual mass is too big and plates don't fit the splines for the simple flywheels.
There are some other threads (360 engine change_ that have some info about an uprated sachs unit, Sachs web site is quite good with all the dimensions on it, good database search. VW transporter looked interesting for my 940 2L turbo flywheel, but I havn't settled on one yet, lots of body restoration to do first.

I'm sure Marko (Fuse) has mentioned vauxhall clutch plates for turbo 360

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Hi
For a bit more power handling you can install a pressure plate from 740 turbo, it bolts right on and is stiffer than the stock 360 pressure plate. 740 Disc won't fit as the splines differ from the 360 disc.
You can run some 228mm VW and Opel/Vauxhall discs also which have same spline size. Those discs are available as sintered paddle clutches. 228mm disc combined with a 740 turbo pressure plate will hold quite nicely (+300hp) Also there are stiffer pressure plate options available such as Sachs Race (SRE) etc... Some info here:
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... 03&p=57011
For even more power handling, SJS has found out that Audi TURBO Quattro 240mm disc has same spline size as 360 so that should work also but I'm not sure what bellhousing/flywheel/pressure plate combo is needed for a disc that large in 360.
Sachs also lists 360 under their catalog in here http://www.usparts.fi/sendFile.php?fileId=4537 At page 254 of that PDF there are two types (rigid and torsion dampered discs, rigid holds more Nm) of 360 sintered paddle discs with 210mm size listed.
When using paddle clutches remember to shim the new clutch in correct position because the thickness of the paddle clutch usually differs from the stock clutch disc. If the clutch is not shimmed it usually slips quite a lot. You can shim the clutch by placing proper size washers between the flywheel and pressure plate. Thickness for the shim plates/washers can be measured by checking how much is the new uprated disc thicker than the new stock disc.

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Marko, that is superb, thankyou
Does that mean the 740 pressure plate combined with a standard diameter disc is possible, or do I need to source a larger diameter plate too?

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Yeah you can run stock 360 disc with the turbo pressure plate! I also spotted a mistake in my last post, stock diameter for 360 clutch disc is 215mm not 210mm. 210mm seems to be the diameter of the sintered paddle clutch which Sachs lists for 360.
But the stock 215mm disc will work with the turbo pressure plate because the stock 360 pressure plate and the pressure plate of the larger turbo Volvos have the same diameter which is 228mm!
Turbos have 228mm discs stock but even with the 215mm disc you'll be able to run even up to ~400Nm with the turbo pressure plate so it might not be problem if you don't source larger disc/paddle clutch. Depends how much torque you'll be putting through the clutch. Totally stock 360 clutch setup in new condition holds something like ~260-270Nm so the turbo pressure plate alone increases the torque holding quite nicely.

Yuuup, its a uprated turbo pressure plate, stock disk.. the fresh stock clutch i fitted with the 150hp 2,3 didn`t last long, but this setup has not yet showed no sign of slipping with the 200hp setup and lots of road and track driving
Only changed the flywheel because i wanter a lighter one and a ignition system where i could adjust the timing, its a stock 240 electronic ignition system(super easy and reliable used on alot of rallycars\cross here)

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Well I'm having to start again from scratch on this for the B230FT. I've looked at the Sachs stuff and designed/selected my preferred parts, including the uprated cover plate, but after trying to buy through TTVi they are no longer available from Sachs so I am looking else where.
Searching for 360 uprated clutch throws up a number of companies that say they offer what you want, but turn out to be 'search feedback' (ie they take your search term and fire it back at you mixed up in some other web page created on the fly).
Black diamond offer Clutches from £188 to £350 approx.
http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/uprated/ ... o/360.html
They only seem to manage 40% extra power with the stage 3 paddle clutch. Anyone any experience of these?
Demon Tweeks offer generic Competition clutches with stage 2 quoting around 60-80% increase (190BHP would be 60% above 120BHP), but no price on-line.

Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
Tony, PM me over the Sachs part numbers you are looking for please and I'll see what I can find. It may be that some place has them hiding down the back of the sofa.
Re: Volvo 360 uprated clutch?
For the benefit of all;
HD Cover plate 883082 999763 (volvo listed Sachs performance item, most 228mm B2xx)
Disk 1861 626 034 (selected 228mm with 360 hub = VW/Audi application)
bearing 3151104001 (Volvo item)
*edit to say the audi disk is slightly thicker and needs shimming on the cover plate, see 2nd page.
Oddly the HD cover and bearing are not available, although the ZF webcat seemed to think they were. I've tried a few sites on the part no's but they are just speculative sites and end up dead ends.
*edit to say it was available and I used it for a while but very heavy to operate.
Any help is appreciated
