had a look-see for a similar thread, didn't find one. so in this thread add your techniques that will help improve the MPG you get from your engine
this is for just normal driving by the way. because driving like a looney and trying to save fuel at the same time doesnt happen

right ill start with a few obvious ones i have picked up in and around:

-Clean filter - better airflow = better MPG
-Clean plugs - stronger spark = better MPG
so throw your tips in

Change your oil and filter while youre on.
It'll give you at least 19 extra horses.*
and at least 10 more mpg.*












* = all stated values are aproximate and wildly innacurate.

earthing points for the engine when i changed and improved them on my polo the mpg was so much better well it seemed i got an extra 50 miles out of 1 tank so worked pretty well that was combined with plugs and new oil and filter though

valve lapping and HT cleaning

Did my 345 valves, suddenly got about 45mpg after getting about 25, engine totally transformed, quiet, torquey etc. think I may have been messing about with the mixture too much and left it lean causing valves to burn. They are a bit soft in the early years (1980).

Less dramatic effect with B200's, but always tightens up the torque. Never had any great success getting decent MPG out of them, been trying for 20 years! My sister got 30mpg from a LPT 940, that was impressive, best I could get from a 360 was about 28mpg.

My 940 gives about 3 more mpg after the dizzy has been cleaned, but it has the stupid cam end dizzy similar to the useless 1.7 engine and still suffers oil contamination even though it has a much better seal system. Mind you I had to scrap my 1.7 because of it, the 940 just gets a little hesitation.

would you recommend lapping on an engine thats done 60k?

Nothing much new to add, except change HT leads, Rotor arm and dizzy cap regularly as well as oil and air/oil filters.

Back on topic:
ballance wheels and get your tyres at to the correct pressure. Can make an mpg difference for sure. and it's so simple, though a rather overlooked aspect of routine maintainance.
