B200E engines

Post by Sciclone » 28 Mar 2005 04:10 am

Hey all, I've just replaced the timing belt on my mum's 360GLT and wanted to know if these engines are free-spinning.

Reason is the car broken down on the road (from the belt snapping), I've replaced the belt and lined all the timing marks up and all and the thing still wont run. The only thing I can think of is that the engine doesn't free-spin and valves are buggered causing no compression. Can someone verify my fears?

When the cam belt snaps on a 360 GLT it normally bends the valves unfortunately! I seem to think he wasn't travelling very fast either, it was only ticking over in traffic. My Dad has experienced this and spent quite some time straightening the valves and replacing some in order to do a proper job on one of his cars a long time ago. It's probably not impossible to redeem though.

Damn.... I was hoping it was like the 850 engines where it is freespinning.....
Thanks for your help mate..... now I might see what other engines can fit into the 360... I smell either a B23ET or a CA18 conversion in the pipeline...

No problem. I hope the car will be saved.

Here is what Huskyracer has added to a 340!

A replacement engine may not be too hard to find. I know of one that may be redundant in the not so distant future.

Yup, they're intereferance, so you're probably toast. Assuming you put the belt on correctly (including paying attention to the aux shaft alignment, as this sets the ignition timing), there's not much else to go wrong. There are a few things you can do though. If it's a B200, pull the head from any B200/230 (except a B230K, if you got those), and it will be a suitable replacement. If it's a B19....anything from a B17, B19, B21, B23 will be cool.

Apart from that, any redblock engine swap is possible. The 140bhp B23E would be cool.

cheers

Yeh I'm pretty sure all the marks were proper.... I couldn't quite figure the bottom mark but I think its correct as it lined up with the marks on the belt.... Oh well looks like i'll get the head shaved and ported while i'm at it...

Thanks for the offer peter but unless you want to ship to Australia then I might have to pass.

We'll see how much that cost compared to a engine swap....

Ah, I see now you've updated your profile, yeah, Australia is a tad too far! Hope you have it running again soon.

Its a bit of a weird one, you have to kind of bend the belt over so the double mark lines up with the top mark on the crank pulley, if you see what I mean.

Well I've got most of the head pulled down.... just forgot to grab the cam gear removal tool from work so its a bit of a pain to pull off.... other than that it should be ready to pull off.

I figure if it doesn't cost too much I'll get the ports polished while its down at the machine shop. They're all ready going to have to reseat the valves anyway so a bit more flow cant hurt right?

Also I was using a Gates belt so it doesn't have the two dotted lines unfortunately....

Well, the heads been off.... I took it down to the engine reconditioners down the road from work... No valves were bent.... which I was very surprised about....

Now I gotta get the motivation to put it all back together again.... I need to get a head gasket, tappet cover gasket and a few other seals which I probably shouldn't have pulled off.... but they were leaking anyway so they needed replacing....

Sorry for the loss of grammar and such but I'm nursing a hangover with 2 cans of Red Bull coursing through my system.

Glad to hear no damage was done....presumably a B200E is non-interference then? Either that or you were incredibly lucky and it went at just the right moment!

Does anyone know the head bolt tensions for the B200e?

Its the start of a long weekend and my mums getting antsy about getting the 360 back on the road.

Thanks all.

Yes, but bear in mind that these bolts are stretch bolts that are angle tightened until they go into plastic deformation. I would therefore change the lot of them to be on the safe side and ensure you get the correct force on them.

Stage 1: 20Nm
Stage 2: 60Nm
Stage 3: Angle tighten 90 degrees.

Thanks, I actually opened the VRS kit and it had all the tensions in there anyway, but thanks for the reply

well I put the head on last night as i finally got the motivation to do it. Just had to get the Hylomar and a nice size torque wrench from work, so the heads on and all torqued up. Was putting on some of the sensors underneath the inlet manifold but it got too dark.... Damn winter, goes dark at 6...

today I hope to have almost everything else done....

Does anybody have a good diagram they can post up of the vacuum spaghetti? I didn't mark every hose when taking the manifold off.
