Swap a clean one for a scabby one??

Post by mrsoundcraft » 21 Jan 2010 08:16 pm

When I bought this 340 I was looking for a track car and ebay provided me with this one or a Skoda Felicia. I opted for this as it was rear wheel drive and didn't have a cat.

However, I soon got sucked into V300 Mania  ! I really like there cars, despite also really liking and driving a particular Jap car from the ninteys. I must have a bit of a split personality as I gather that these two groups of owners don't usually understand each other. sm6

Anyway Im trying to get to the point. Ive been putting off stripping the 340 out. It just seems to good to do it, but this was bought to be a track car! I thought Id see if anyone on here was interested in a "nice one" in place of their not so nice one. If not then I'll take that as a sign to track it.

Its got 3" classic Swede lowering springs and KYB dampers on the front, polybushed wishbones, tie bars and ARB, 40mm blocks on the back with Lanrdrover Monroe shocks.
Ive replaced the clutch and front brake pads and It's got a K&N filter on the carb. Also fitted a rev counter to the dash and MR2 seats in the front.

These pics are from before I lowered it.

2 months ago an Astra attempted to pull out across my path and this happened. The car is still in regular use and has not sustained any structural damage. I have since popped the rear door out and touched up the paintwork.

Thanks guys. Ive only just realised that Ive currently got 2 daily drivers, and that's not what I was trying to do. It was all about getting onto the track to improve my driving.

I was absolutely fumming :x when I got hut, It was really really nice before that. Ive not been able to get any money out of the woman, she said "how much, I cant afford that" and that was the last I heard. It looks much better now though than in the photos.

I suppose I should mention its got nearly a full year of tax and MOT till April, and really tidy underneath too. 56/57000 miles 1.4l.

As said good on you for offering it up :)

I take it you've got the details of the bird who tried to "modify" it for you? I'd politely inform her it's going to cost £XXX amount to fix, alternatively you'll take it through your insurers but make sure she understands she'll still be paying more every year from then on until she gets a no claims bonus back.

Too many chancers out there who think they can prang cars and get away with it because the car is old, so frikkin what, the age is irrelevant, just say for example it had "just" been an old E Type or similar, just because of the value difference her arguement is floored boils my pee, it really does. sm2

Yeah I'm having the same problem with this family of the girl who hit me. Just because on paper the car is a write off doesn't mean it is worthless and "just an old car". I don't want another car, I want mine.

I wasn't thinking so clearly after it happened but I though I was doing her a favor by not involving the insurance, but she doesnt see it that way.

Im am convinced that my insurance company would take my car away if I had reported the damage. And I was not prepared for them to scrap it and give me £50. Especially as I had spent about £8-900 on it in the six months that I'd had it .

I have however sort of got over the accident, but I do now drive as though the road's full of cars about to jump out in front of me. :(

Anyway I am regretfully having to consider continuing with my original plan for this car, or finding someone willing to swap.
The Deal is variable as I could de-mod the car eg. keep the alloys and suspension bits, steering wheel. This gets the whole thing closer to a straight swap.

Re: insurance claim.
As a guide mate, my 340 was 'written off' by a helpfull lady too. Through the insurance I ended up settling for £600 + keeping the car. The damage was similar to yours. If you don't want to give the car up, you don't have to. You can insist on keeping it. The accident wasn't your fault, so you need to be compensated to a level that suits you, not them.

I'd claim dude.

Im no expert, but i dont think so.
Friends have been down the 'arguing for ages then finally going down the insurance route' before with no problems. Just say she promised to pay, and hasnt. So youre making a claim against her.

The worst that can happen is that you end up back where you are now.
The best would be a pocket full of money.

Worth the phonecall dude.

Yeah dude, it was off someone elses insurance though.
The only comparisons for value at the time were a low milage 360 on Autotrader.com for £1000 and a 340 vario on ebay for £450.
I provided the insurance company with links to both and said my value of the car was £900, sourcing, replacing and painting three pannels would have cost more than that proffessionally, and I refused to give up the car.
After 'umming and ahing' and 'speaking to his boss' they rang me back and said £600 + the car, and nothing more.
SOLD!
