My 340 **NOW SOLD** 1987 1.4 27000 miles.

Post by Ian Mac » 21 Mar 2011 10:06 am

I've decided at last to part with my 340. The mileage is now at 27k, MOT runs until August and tax until July. There are plenty of pics of the car on here already but you'll be pleased to know that thanks to MCHUDD it's now wearing proper Volvo wheel trims in place of the cheap aftermarket items which drew such adverse comment from most of you a few weeks ago..

The car is in excellent order with none of the ususal 340 rot spots - the front valance, rear jacking points etc are perfect and the entire underside is more akin to a three year old car than one approaching 25.

Overall the car is difficult to fault although it does have a few very minor issues - for example the drivers door seal is rubbed through in a couple of places where the original elderly owner brushed against it when he got in and out. There is also minor scuff damage to the nearside front wheel arch again caused by the original owner - this has been touched-in and most people don't notice it unless it's pointed-out to them. The only other thing to mention (and this is very minor) is light scuffing to the plastic bumper corners.

Mechanically the car is all good with no known faults. The clutch is slightly high but shows no sign of juddering or slipping and there is a slight steering pull to the left - the track has been checked and found to be ok and as there is no sign of uneven tyre wear or misalignment of the steering wheel I haven't bothered with it.

The car is good enough to show as it is and with minimal effort could be a show winner. I'm looking for around £795 so if four gears, no heated seats and a LW/MW radio float your boat give me a shout. The car is in the West Midlands, not far from Birmingham.

I will add the most recent pictures as soon as possible but to all extents and purposes the car is as already pictured on here, apart from the wheel trims.

Hi Ian.
For such a good car, would it not be better to hold on to it.
Anyway, good luck with the sale.
Cheers Mark. sm4

It would be good to hold onto it Mark but I have space issues and the threat of redundancy still looms so I can't keep everything unfortunately. The 11000 mile Lada was too good to miss and even though it's not to everyones taste I like it and that's all that matters really. As I'm editor of the Yugo Club magazine I couldn't sell the Yugo even if I wanted to (which I don't) so I've sold the other Lada and now I'm offering the Volvo. We'll see what happens - I suppose I could keep it if necessary but don't tell the wife....

The pictures in the attached links show the colour fairly well. The car has changed little since these were taken except it now has Volvo wheel trims which I fitted because the steel wheels started to look a bit jaded during the winter and I didn't get chance to repaint them.

The service book wasn't given to me unfortunately but I do have a number of invoices for various work carried-out plus 15 MOT certifcates to validate the mileage.

The car is now advertised on Car and Classic and based on the level of interest should sell fairly quickly - I have a number of viewings booked for Saturday so we'll see how it goes.

Looks fab, Ian. Very, very keen price in my book. Should sell easily for the asking price I'd imagine.

BTW, I share your fascination with East European cars from the Communist era - never owned one but hanker after a proper pre-Riva Zhiguli, the model with the twin headlamps and chrome grille. Almost bought a mint Yugo last summer, but my 360 cropped up which I couldn't resist. I've driven a lot of Yugos in my time, being a regualar visitor to former Yugoslav countries, my favourite being a convertible 55 which I rented in Montenegro once. It was a LHD with MPH speedo - must have been destined for the USA at the time the economic sanctions hit and never shipped.

There can't be many of us on this planet who share such affection for such unfashionable cars as 300s and old Commie stuff!

:360:
7.52pm: I'm jealous. I really wish that I was a) a Fulham fan; and b) at Craven Cottage. What a night for them. The players are still on the pitch, loving it.

Cheers mate but I don't think there are many on here who share my affection for the Lada Samara - I think it must be a front wheel drive thing..

My interest in Eastern Bloc cars began when the Wall came down in 1989 and I managed to buy one of the first 17 Trabants in the UK shortly afterwards. I then won a second Trabant in a competition in a now-defunct car magazine called Jalopy. The whole thing then snowballed with more Trabants (including the one on my avatar which got pushed through the front of my mothers house by a run-away Ford Transit  ), a Lada Riva and a couple of Yugos. I'm now the magazine editor for the Zastava Yugo Club UK (http://www.zastava-yugo.co.uk/index.html) and my 311 is one of only two roadworthy survivors currently known to the club.

I will hopefully buy another Trabant before the prices reach Citroen 2cv and VW Beetle levels and hopefully I may eventually find an affordable FSO Polonez which if you close one eye and squint looks a bit like a Dodge Charger. Well, sort of..

Hi Ian.
Very well worded add in car and classic. Should have know bother selling at that price.
I had a Lada once years ago. Nothing ever went wrong with it but it rotted underneath.
Good luck with the sale.

Ashamed,though I am,to admit I once owned a 511.

Always reminded me of an inverted skip

It's showpiece was when turning right on a roundabout me mate wound down the passenger window which caught the door handle wire opening the door and giving him a far closer inspection of the tarmacadam than he cared for

I personally think you're a mentalist but wish you well with the sale sm4
