Cool, just thought I'd check. No worries, I like to help if I can. I know you've been wanting one for ages too!

Go on then, I'll have the second one if it's still around and still £20ish (I've only skimmed this thread ;))

Bad news guys

I sent my panel up to the guy for him to copy, and unfortunately he says it's a bit beyond his expertise to recreate it :(

He'd probably be able to make a simpler version is anyone was interested - just a flat fitting panel with the gauge holes. Probably best to contact him if you're interested.

Carl - If my old panel goes for £200 - I want comission !! .

Seriously though, it looks like you've drawn blank getting more made - just a thought - female mould in silicone rubber - master male in resin - vacuum formed copies ??. Most of the cost would be in producing the master - must be someone in V3M who could do it. Should be several small firms willing to do a short run if given a master to work with. Even possible and probably easier to use 'female' and lay up in chopped mat and resin - after all, vast numbers are not needed.

Ideas anyone ??

Mac.

No idea about this sort of thing Mac, but if anyone thinks they can do this, or knows someone that can do this I could temporarily donate my gauge panel before it goes into the car. Speak up now or forever hold your peace!

I was thinking of doing this last summer, when there was a panel on ebay. I was going to take a glass mould, and then glass copies. Problem I thought of was that the resin reaction used in glass is exothermic, and would have stuffed the orig, and also I didn't get the panel as it went silly priced.

Mac, do you know if silicon is a 'cold' material?

You're right Chris - the resin cure exothermic reaction would stuff the orig. panel if you tried to take a glass mould but as far as I know using sil/rubber does not generate heat and I think it would be ok to take a first female mould (you could then make a plaster male and then a glass female).

I'll do some digging and see what I can come up with.

Silicone/rubber is a safe way to go - I have used the stuff on plastic (former model maker  )

It is probably the best way to go for replicas

Ahh great stuff, thanks both

In which case I know there is a shop 10 mins up the road that does the stuff (I think, I've seen casting resin mould making stuff in there...) If you could either pm me some pointers or put them up here 990, I'll have some spare time in a week or so, and could give it a go so long as Carl doesn't mind. If I practise on something not quite so rare, should be ok, or are the odds of me stuffing it high?

mouldings

Have a look at this site for ideas,

http://www.laserproto.com - specifically prototyping and vac casting.

Strange site - you have to scroll down to see anything !

Right, in which case I'll buy the stuff, and have a few practises on other bits first, and if it goes well, I'll grab the panel from you Carl! I'll let you know how it goes, and if you havn't heard anything after the 2nd, chase me up!

EDIT: Just had a look at that site Mac, looks like some cool stuff, not sure how much they'd charge, but ideas from there, and a quote never hurts! I reckon silicon mould, then I'll prolly lay up grp panels, but I'll have a proper read up before I promise anything!

panels

Post by mac » 20 May 2006 07:07 pm

Hi Chris, I doubt it would be feasible to get anything done by a pro company as the numbers would be very small - but that site does illustrate that a moulding process is possible.

It looks like the way to go is to use a hard grade of silicone rubber to produce a female mould of the front of the panel, use that to produce a male from say plaster of paris, then take a final female from the plaster using resin (the sort you make up 'kit' chess sets from). (I think this sort of process will be needed as I doubt Carls panel would survive a direct resin mould).

With a good mould release agent I think a resin master could give a good few
grp copies - you could self colour the fibreglass resin - or use a 'crackle' finish spray (AH sprite owners love that stuff). Frosts do it in several colours.
