one note on gaskets.
i'm following with great interest.
i have a box full of gaskets, really a lot of different ones. most v300.
another V3M member from holland (Bodejodel) has tons of B14 Sump gasket kits. there's really no need to reproduce these yet.
and besides, theres rubber parts in that gasket kit too. (and; even the original kits tend to leak)

No question of producing gaskets that can be obtained still - but this really all about sourcing diff pan gaskets which are unobtainable now in the UK.
I am intending to start a gasket 'bank' but as a reference collection so that in the future someone has at least got an example to make a template if supplies 'dried up'. Earlier in this thread I mentioned a few but simply because I have those lying around already.

yeah for the gaskets that are not available its a super idea,
just wanted to warn you that the sump gaskets do not fit in that category yet
making reproductions of the rubber pieces could get difficult, they are profiled rubber strips.
PS I might be tempted to stick a number of gaskets under the scanner
ie i have this little gasket between the idle regulation screw housing and inlet manifold, from a 2.0i
PPS some gaskets from the engine are identical to certain renault parts. as the number of renaults with a similar engine as the 1.4 is quite large, one might be able to source certain gaskets through their dealerships/specialists.

I've been trying to hunt down an inlet manifold gasket for my BX and have been having huge troubles. Earlier on I suddenly had a flash of brilliance - I bought some cheap gaskets/oil seals offf ebay a while ago for the 360. These were by British Gasket Automotive. Checked out their website, http://www.bgautomotive.co.uk/html/catalogue.html , and they had the one's I was after. They also sell quite a few for the 300s (all engine related ones).
I've got a 'Conversion Set' for the B200E engine which contains sump gasket, the aux shaft cover gasket, possibly a water pump gasket and a few other I'm not really sure about. Plus loads of oil seals and copper washers. Might found out one day what they're all for

Does nobody want to test a 1.2mm diff gasket ?
I have sourced an old gasket, made a template, researched materials, purchased samples, made gaskets, have a 1.6mm currently under test, (which is on Varts 5sp.conversion project). But as I no longer actually own a 300 myself (throw that man out they all cry) I don't have another test car.
If I am to progress this I need a leeetle help here.
(now he sounds like he's in a huff) but if there really isn't any interest out there and people are happy to make their own then I won't spend any more time on it. I'm cool either way.
I'm hot, tired, and grumpy this evening - spent the day under Mrs.Macs 440.
New genuine Volvo exhaust fitted (to get rid of annoying boom/resonance at about 75-80. Mrs.Mac reckoned she couldn't hear it but it bugged the hell out of me - now blissfully gone). New 'Bilstein' gas dampers, and rear anti roll bar bushes and links. Sorted partially seized h/brake linkage on o/s rear caliper (I'll probably end up with new unit - God I hate those combined caliper/handbrakes). Horror - found a rust blister just starting on o/s rear wheel arch inner lip - sorted that!. Enjoyable half hour 'painting' brake pipes with copper grease - etc.etc. - you all know the form. Oh and I stuck a set of plugs in it as well.
Yes I know - threadjack - and I don't care!!.

As you know diff gaskets are no longer available and I am looking at suitable materials to make replacements.
The original gasket was 1.2mm thick, of an aramid composite with very low compressability. (Centellen WS3820 which is expensive in small quanties))
I am considering using an alternative (cheaper). I am already testing a 1.6mm material which will equate with 1.2 when fitted and the cover bolts torqued up. However I would like to try a 1.2mm thickness in the same material which would not only be cheaper (bulk supply is priced by total thickness) but also easier to stamp/cut out to shape.
All I need is for someone to actually fit a gasket and monitor it for a period to make sure there are no seepages or leaks of oil. The material is of an adequate spec. and has been used in automotive tranmissions before so I do not anticipate any problems. I have no doubt that 1.2mm works in theory but I need to make sure that it works in the real world.
If you could PM me your name/address I'll pop a gasket in the post to you and you can try it when you get a chance.

Mac, I'll PM details and try and wop it on in time for the Robson-100+ competive miles should be a decent test

If you could either post or PM what torque settings you recommend and what lube- got plenty EP80/90 but there has been differing opinions as to what to use.

Good work Mac and sven360! I'd have offered to do this, but things are rather busy and it's essential stuff only at the moment. I know that I'll one day need to use such gaskets and the early work now is essential. Others will need to use such parts too in the future, so don't lose heart now Mac.
It's one of those things that is only just emerging as being a problem and once it really takes hold, the parts won't be easy to find, resulting in cars being scrapped or breaking needlessly. My diff is currently very clean and leak free, oddly for a 300, so I'm none too keen on disturbing it until I see any signs of problems. However I do have some gearbox noises. I'm going to save one of my other gearboxes to go into my 360. So when it comes to that time, I'll probably replace the diff gasket, meaning I'll need the services of Mac!

My diff is currently very clean and leak free, oddly for a 300, so I'm none too keen on disturbing it until I see any signs of problems. However I do have some gearbox noises. I'm sure this has been posted before but to confirm:-
Volvo specifies Hypoid gear oil SAE90 (to API GL5 or higher) You probably won't find a straight 90 in most places so use SAE80W90.
Cover bolts are torqued to 9Nm (Haynes says 8Nm) It is ok to 'nip them up' a little if there is any seepage - but any more risks cover distortion (which I suspect is the main reason for diffs leaking anyway).
