1986 Volvo 360 GLE for sale

Post by Isbjorn » 04 Feb 2012 04:43 pm

360 GLE (2.0L carb, saloon, not PAS), 1986, 100,000 miles, B200K engine, Solex 34-34 CISAC carb. Bodywork VGC ("wax-oiled" at new), no dings but a few small paint touch up spots, my untrained eye can't see any significant structural rust, but there are rust spots around wheel arch edges. One pensioner owner from new. MoT until 22/3/12, disabled tax class. Service history traced to 50K miles, fairly sure routinely serviced after that as my father looked after it well, always garaged until last couple of years. Reconditioned steering rack and new steering coupling fitted March 2010, perished fuel hoses replaced. Tyres 4/4/3/3/2 mm. Temporary repair to front/middle exhaust joint, front pipe being severed near the joint, (quoted £50 part + minimum of £50 labour) and to tail pipe finisher. No other reason to believe it would not pass next MoT. Driver’s power window motor works but glass sticks, wiper blade carrier for nearside headlamp wiper is missing. Car will come with:- 1 x pair unused, boxed, front discs (pads look thick), 1 x unused cam belt, 2 x unused fan belts, owners manual in original wallet, Haynes manual, dossier of paperwork, pair door mirrors (looks as though must have been replaced due to minor damage to plastic body). I don't have the tools/facilities for DIY otherwise I would have changed the exhaust and brake discs and fixed the driver's power window. This is a genuine offer of my father's good, well looked after car, (he has just gone into a residential care home) - if it were an estate bodyshell I would keep it (Volvo longevity!), but I really want to buy a campervan and will need to clear the space on my drive. First choice is for it to go to a Volvo enthusiast who will cherish it, 2nd to anyone else, 3rd to scrapyard (shameful waste). Anyone interested? Location Cumbria but could be seen by arrangement on a route to Sheffield or North Lincolnshire. Tel. 01946 822032 (answerphone) or e-mail isbjorn@tiscali.co.uk (NB I can be away for long periods, so there may be delays to replies). What do I want for it? Bearing in mind that the car is in working order (recently in regular use for my Dad) and looking at other advertised 360's, I think £450 ONO is a fair and reasonable asking price, hagglers are welcome. I am no expert, but it has potential to be a show model?

Looks really nice! I would snap that up if I could shift my 340 drifter. My girlfriend might like driving that one!

Update - car now also comes with a complete exhaust system (all four parts including gaskets and hangers, but not fitted) and I'm still asking £450 ONO - that's for a car with very good bodywork, in working order (just done a 500 mile trip these last few days and maybe do a couple such more before MoT expires) with approx £200 of new/reconditioned parts available or recently fitted. :D

WITHRAWN FROM SALE for the time being. Have decided not to sell such a good car after all - may as well keep it running to avoid the new MoT test requirements which can trip up a modern, more complicated car.

My 360GLE saloon is sadly no more. Someone forgot to apply their handbrake and, after leaving their vehicle, it rolled away downhill and smashed into the front of my parked, unattended, 360. Front bumper was irreparably buckled and offside headlamp glass was shattered, otherwise quite driveable, but attending police officer advised against due to "sharp projections". Insurer's decided it was "beyond economical repair" and have written it off. Insurers, in conjunction with DVLA intransigence, made it virtually impossible to "buy the car back" so, a very sad end to a classic that was in such great condition.

As a result I have some spares left over, if anyone would like them; there is a complete, new, unfitted exhaust from exhaust manifold through to tailpipe (VO108/VO145/VO147), including gasket and hangers; a pair of new, unfitted front brake discs (solid, not ventilated); some drive belts and a couple of driver's side door mirrors with slightly damaged shells (my Dad must have had them renewed at some time). All these parts are in remote West Cumbria, could be shipped (but how do you post a 4-piece exhaust?!).

Bad news :(

Probably too late and irrelevant now but for future reference:

They can't refuse to let you buy it back.
The DVLA can't stop you either.

I was told by the body shop who eventually repaired a tansit I had written off that they can't stop you and not to take any cr*p from them. I pestered them a bit and got it back and had it fixed. (and made a profit :P ).

DVLA just sent me a new V5 whan I sent off for it and it wasn't even down as written off!!!

In fact if the damage was only bumper and light glass it's even questionable that it should be written off. Bumper £100, colour coded spray £150, glass £20 (or even whole light!), still leaves £180 for labour for changing the parts (assuming £450 car value)...maybe there was a little bit of other paintwork/bodywork damage which soon pushed the price up.

Sounds to me like they incorrectly valued the car at £200 maybe?. I would have hassled them continuosly as a point of principal. Might have even been cheaper for the person who's car it was to pay themselves by the time they've paid their excess and incresed premium?

More or less any claim under £1000 you would be best of digging into your own pocket rather than loose you no claims.

My dad had a long fight with the NFU for a broken window and scratch on his 240 estate. They wanted to right it off just for that and after he refused it took months to get them to pay out without putting a CAT C on it! They do try and bully you and seem to hate older cars and want them off the road.

Hi there!

Is this your car???

http://www.copart.co.uk/c2/homeSearch.h ... CH_RESULTS

I was looking on here for a friend and this car popped up yesterday.

Just so happened to have a quiet evening tonight so thought I'd browse V3M

If the insurance company refuse to sell it to you (they can't) you can get it back from here?

good luck!
Enjoy your 300s

My 1986 Volvo 360 GLE is available to buy

Post by Isbjorn » 25 Jan 2013 02:36 am

If any 360 enthusiast wants it, here it is:- http://www.copart.co.uk/c2/individua...ype=onSaleNow#
As I said in my original post, the body style doesn't suit my needs and I had been indecisive about selling/keeping it - that decision has been made for me; I won't be bidding for it, it's too far away to collect and I want the space on my drive for a camper (if and when I get it). The radiator didn't look compromised by the low speed impact. It does need a new front exhaust pipe as it is severed/patched at the joint with the middle pipe (I hadn't got around to fitting the new exhaust (which I still have, here in Cumbria)) and the front brake discs thickness is below minimum spec. The petrol tank was nearly full (£75 worth). I still have other bits and keys for it.

:D Yes, it probably will be an easy repair, and a new owner will soon have a "ready to drive car" with lots of life left in it yet (I've been using it as a daily runabout and was going to drive 200 miles back to home in it the day after the crunch). However, this is provided that all of the parts can be found, if you have the tools and the facilities - I can only do easy DIY and I have no shelter from the elements. The recovery bodyshop manager didn't want to take on the risk of buying in parts only to find himself short of a critical part. I tried an internet "scrap dealer" search engine, which turned up no replies, so I don't want to assume that risk either and I have no easy means of transporting it 200 miles back home just to then assume that risk :( . Maybe an enthusiast with the time, knowledge and facilities will know the best places to look for parts. The MoT was valid until end of May 2013, but is that made invalid now by the incident/scrapped status? :?: I can post on documentation, service information, keys, spares, brake discs, exhaust etcetera to any new owner if they get in touch. :)

I'd be interested in these, let me know how much you want.

Do you still visit Sheffield or North Lincolnshire regularly? If so I'm pretty close by the route you may take, in Doncaster.
