I wouldn't either, luck of the draw - you weren't to know and given it's a private sale you're not obliged to do so. It's a 25yr old car, so anything could be found with a bit of digging! Did he come and view the car? If not then he should've!

If I was paying that sort of money for a 25 year old car I'd certainly give it really good looking over. Those rear jacking points are a total pain to weld round. The welder who used to work on my old Mk 1 said "you don't want to bother with these do you?" He was right, took them off and welded a plate over...much better job!

You told him it had been welded and unless you gave a warrenty then I'd say you're not at all liable.

I'd write back in a nice way and just remind him that your not liable.

Out of interest, how many miles had it done?

Edit, just found mileage, at that mileage you could reasonably expect 'some' minor rust, especially if it's already been welded. Still a cracking car, and at least it's out of sight so no expensive painwork needed.

Maybe he fell foul of a very stringent M.O.T. inspector?

Have you ever watched American Hotrod. They strip down some old/mint cars that are worth money and rebuilt from the ground up. The always find rust horrors, and so you will on any car if you look hard enough, it comes with the terratory. If you are not prepared to do some welding on an old car you need to check it out harder when you buy, even then I would expect to miss stuff and I know what I'm looking for.

As other have said its sold as seen!

He put it up on ramps to investigate a slight knock from the exhaust (I'd included a brand new OEM full exhaust system in the sale, as I knew the existing one didn't have much life left in it). Then he started sticking screwdrivers in the bodywork by the looks of his pictures, and found the rust.
7.52pm: I'm jealous. I really wish that I was a) a Fulham fan; and b) at Craven Cottage. What a night for them. The players are still on the pitch, loving it.

As above, he's an idiot himself for buying an old car and not finding the rust himself when he came to inspect it. If he bought it blind, also tough!

He's either a chancer or inexperienced. Either way, tell him to naff off

Oh man, I'm fully with you, don't give owt back. If you buy blind, you take a chance and get what you get; been there, done that, still do it, sometimes its good, sometimes its not and that's just tough luck. The main thing is don't give anything back to these menacing types because they'll only ask for more.... if you give them a yard, they'll be back demanding a mile.
