My 360 GLT for sale

Post by Jaspersilus » 13 Apr 2013 04:38 pm

Hi Chaps,
from next week my 1988 360 GLT will be for sale, decided ( wife decided) need money to go on holiday not fix up old car, most of you know the story. its on the forum to see, has been in barn for 12 years, generally nice condition, is currently sorned, will need trailering away.
Requires some welding, NON TO CHASSIS, bottom front of front wings and a little on inner front wheel arches, a patch on passenger side sill too! everything else behind front wings is in nice condition! Sunroof works and does not leak but the sunroof panel has a couple of small holes in.
There is a brake fluid leak in brake master cylinder I have a new one ready to go on, have also replaced rear brake cylinders for new ones and have serviced the engine, which has a genuine 64k and runs beautifully! interior is in lovely condition also and has a CD player fitted.
Oh,there is rust in the spare wheel well which will need attention, if you can weld this will be a very cheap fix, or maybe have a mate who welds!

There is a same spec/colour 360 GLT with more miles on ebay at the moment in nowhere near as good condition so I am going to watch and see how much this goes for to give me an idea of price, oh and its also got 4 nearly new tyres Pirelli all season on back and firestones on the front, and its metallic blue.

Viewing Welcome.
Cheers Jason

Hi Chaps,
maybe Im being a little premature here, the360 GLT that just sold on ebay went for £160, scrap value is about £150, why sell for that? Ive seen a set of Leos sell for more!

Whats a GLT worth sold as parts? I have never seen a GLT sell for less than £350,whats going on?

How much is a set of GLT alloys with good tyres worth?
4 near perfect doors worth?
Good bonnet worth?
Perfect colour coded bumpers worth?
Perfect interior worth?

any ides?

Oh,and how much would it be fixed with 12 months MOT? My guess would be £600 plus, what do you think?

It's very hard to say with the "bulky stuff". There are very few buyers around who will pay money for good body panels, as they usually need to be picked up in person. The price of a bumper / door / bonnet is usually a lot less then the fuel you need to pick it up.

I'd say anything between 0 and 30 pounds per item, more maybe if they're absolutely perfect (no scratch, no dent, no blistering). And a considerable reduction for a bulk buy.

Cheers

It's worth what someone is prepared to pay on the day. This can vary wildly depending on location, depth of pockets, rarity, blah, blah, blah.

Now if you wanted more than 160, you should have put a reserve on it or a higher starting price. Or even just sold it with a classified ad. I think now is not the time for backtracking.

... and very important is "how quickly do you have to sell".

The V300 "scene tax" is ... er ... a little lower than, say for a 1969 VW camper van. If you put up a door on Ebay, 1 pound starting price, 10 day limit, you will get 2 pounds if you're lucky. But if you take some nice pictures, post up the correct colour code, describe the condition honestly, give your postal code, and wait 6 months, you may get a bit more.

Cheers

But being a mk3, your car doesn't have Leos?

I've sold parts considerably less than "market value" because I want to help 300's survive a bit longer. Good luck getting £150 from a scrap yard currently, it's just not that high. Don't forget that will be for a delivered car too, which unless you have a car trailer, you'll need to hire a trailer for.

If you wanted to make money from the car, you should have asked your Mum to drive store an E-Type. Whilst it pains me to say it, the car you have in your possession just isn't worth money. You know as well as I do the one thing that goes wrong with 360's is the body work. Never have we seen a 360 with a good shell but a blown redblock. If you are prepared to put the time in to weld the cars up (lets just say MOT welding, not a proper job) then you are looking at a significant job on your shell. You must be, else you'd have had it done/ done it, you have as much interest in 300s as the rest of us here and you are someone who has been in the scene a good number of years.

I don't mean to down beat your car, but you have to be realistic. A really quite pretty roadworthy GLT must be worth £1000 of anybodies money today. Scruffy cars with MOT seem to be 5-600 atm. There is currently a (admittedly, just from photos) very nice one on ebay with an unmet reserve at 500. So, hiring a car trailer from yours to pick the car up, £100. Petrol for vehicle that car legally tow the weight of a 300. Either several weeks welding or paying someone to weld plus consumables (that is a significant number of halfords gas bottles, or probably a "proper size" Argoshield fill. All of a sudden, those numbers taken from £500 make paying any more than £150 for the car (which, as it's been standing will also need all rubber parts) the only way to buy it.

This is why so many people break their cars. None of us like it, but people are so hell bent on money being the end all, it's what happens. On the other hand, given the amount of time you've had for restoring the car, I hope you realise the time taken to break one?

Rant off. Grump.

Cheers Chaps,
now I have dried my tears, I will respond, firstly I know my car does not have Leos, my point was merely that a set of alloys should not be worth the same as a complete car
I am not saying my car is worth a lot, but surely £300 is not massively optimistic, I do love 300s and have been around for a while but honestly have never seen a reasonable mileage GLT regardless of condition sell for £160, can see myself having a blue pile of volvo rust on my drive in 10 years time, I know I sound greedy and whiny and one of those people who thinks their car is worth far more than it is, its just that I do love, and maybe its value is more emotional than monetary!

BUT I STILL WANT £300 :!:

This is understandable.

The reason I have a rusty B14 (Kar) on my driveway that hasn't moved is that it is worth nothing to anyone else. Like anything, it's down to desirability. If you have have Econ/Ambient temp gauges, a body kit and snow cap it'll be easy to sell.

It's the same with restoring them. There is the same work in welding up a Rolls as there is in welding up a 340. Guess which one you can get away with charging real money for.

I truly don't mean to rain on your sale. I know you are into the cars as much as the rest of us. I have just picked up a "free" 240 with a friend, which has already cost more than a small ads roadworthy 240 will sell for :(

Hi,
Chris I do agree with what you say, when my wife passes her driving test, and takes over the family car I will buy another, it will definately need a mint body, oily bits are easier to sort, and not a 360, a 340 1.4 will be my choice, cos believe it or not I do prefer the 1.4 to the 2.0, never really appreciated the over fly wheeled feel of the b200!

So will be looking for a late 340 gl/gle, decent miles or maybe a mercedes 190e :?

Cheers Jason

Don't despair, John Allam is a good bloke who'll take care of it and has had a few 300's in the past. I'm sure it'll live to see another day.
