Its an awesome motor - just a bit of rust to work on in some places. I hope it finds a good home. Evil work.

Re: Volvo 340 GLE 1.7 1987
Yeah "360 Beast" is spot on, Skylor - it's a 5 speed manual. Never had an ounce of trouble with the gears / gearbox.
Bought a choke cable yesterday; will have to wait a few days for post delivery. When it arrives, I will pop it in & try re-seating the air filter housing ( not happy with that yet - not sure the bolts on top of the carb that go up into the air filter housing are level - so worried there might be an air leak - will put up a "help me post" as regards that if I don't get it sorted).
I'm hoping the choke cable will help me to get it idling smoothly. Will put up some updates once I get to that.
Hello to McHudd (Mark) & Bogbasic - yeah I just put in a shot of the driver's seat because the interior really is very good - even without a brush & clean. As I have stated in the thread, I haven't jacked her up yet but from lying down & looking under - the underbody looks good. There's oil around that block in the mid to rear - what do you call it - is it a rear driveshaft thing? Exhaust is a bit rusty in places - hasn't done that many miles that exhaust - it's just the last 7 years sitting outside on the drive. The front nearside spring could be gone - looks a bit bunched up. The rust is the killer - you can't really tell from the photos but the doors are properly bad!! There are two sites of definite welding required - maybe some more small bits that I haven't spotted.
There are currently a couple of possible lines of interest from 300Mania members but there's no rush. If she can be saved or, at worst, broken by a 300Mania member then that would be a result. I can't stomach her being crushed by the scrap man. Since I got her started I'm very happy to be able to play with her again after all this time. If I did manage to get her idling smoothly without choke & at running temperature, then I would start getting quite excited. If nobody wants her right now then I will keep her through until about the early Autumn (have to be getting ready for selling my house around about then, so will have to start clearing the decks inside & outside) - and I'll see what progress I make.
I'll be trying to learn how to weld on my 1990 Fiesta inside the garage from February - so if that goes well & I still have the 340, then I will start to weld her up - after that the sky would be the limit! I love dreaming!!
Thanks for your encouragement guys,
kind regards, Volvopandy.

Hi Derskine, sent you a pm ref. the choke cable.
I think I've got a buyer who says he is going to fix her up & get her back on the road. Will update as & when.

Re: Volvo 340 GLE 1.7 1987
Not sure if anyone will read this it's been so long since the last post!
Anyway, the guy I was holding this for has reneged on his word and so it is still available - if anyone is interested, which I doubt really.
I was fiddling with the sunroof earlier & made a hole in it! Obviously it was already rusted through but I definitely made it worse! Leave well alone..... oh dear!
I haven't worked on the car since the last posts - ie Jan 2015 time, apart from fitting a new carb cable - not sure I fitted that correctly though.
I had been working on my 1990 Fiesta, prepping it for a possible welding project - but eventually realised, after a lot of work, that it would A) take longer than anticipated & B) maybe be beyond me altogether - so:
I bought another Fiesta 1995 with 12 months MOT as a run -around - but I haven't been able to fix an alternator / battery re-charging problem with it - so I am pretty screwed.
So I am thinking of getting another Fiesta (third time lucky!!!) & trying to make one good one out of the three! Like a sort of Super Mutant Fiesta!
If I do do this then I need the other side of the drive where the Volvo currently resides - so I think I'd better put the word out again. It is to try to avoid a scrappage but I need some money for her as well - I am not a wealthy person despite living in my Dad's decent house!
The car is not great - I would say it's for breaking but then I'm not much of a mechanic - so if anyone is interested then please get in touch very soon. There are pictures earlier in this thread.
Feel free to ask questions / get in touch generally.
Best wishes to all the fabulous Volvo Mania people.
Volvopandy.

Re: Volvo 340 GLE 1.7 1987
Going...going...
Hi Guys, Volvopandy here again. This is the final, final offer of my 340 1987 1.7cc. I've got a car on my front lawn that 's got to take the Volvo's space on the drive. It's scrap value, a breaker in my opinion; I don't have the time, money or expertise to fix her up & another winter is really going to finish off the bodywork - 4 or 5 really bad areas of rust, especially the doors - they are terrible.
I couldn't start her yesterday - battery is dead, petrol tank empty - read my other posts for further details, ie she was ticking over a few months ago - she hasn't ceased - she was turning weakly yesterday but wouldn't fire.
A genuine 340 member can have her for £80 cash - no negoiations - but you'd have to collect with a trailer.
I really hate to do it but it looks like I have to scrap her - I have to move on to other things - I have genuinely tried to save her for the last 8 months but I've been unsuccessful.
Anyone interested, please reply immediately.
Thanks for your time,Volvopandy.

Re: Volvo 340 GLE 1.7 1987
Just a final update. My Volvo 340 has gone to car heaven unfortunately. No one came in for her so, as stated last December, she had to go before the Autumn arrives. I did try hard for nearly 9 months to find someone to break her up to distribute the parts but alas 'twas not possible.
I'll be back on in the not too distant future as a friend might be getting rid of his 360 auto (I think it's 360 & not 340?!) & he knows less about cars than I do so he needs a hand with it all. Also I might have a few small bits to sell once I get down to organising the garage.
I'll still be logging into V3M as i have a carb on my "to-be-renovated" Fiesta & there's only one person to ask about carbs & that's The Mighty Mac.
So thanks to everybody who read the thread & especially those who commented & provided encouragement.
'Til the next time.....
Volvopandy.

Not your fault mate,
not your fault man,
no one's got the space
to save every tin can ;-=
Much as I'd love to
save them all mate
It'd make me neglect
my own tin crate.

Re: Volvo 340 GLE 1.7 1987
Thanks for your poetic message Bogbasic. If I wasn't planning to move house then I might have kept her for a bit longer & done some work but I've got two Fiestas & my lodger has just bought a car so I didn't have space for 4 cars! She served me well between 2004-2007 but after that I had to look after my parents & had no time to work on cars - and no car likes to be sitting there doing nothing. That's where I lost the battle really - my parents had to come first.
Still, I'll be having a play with my friend's 360 down in Bromley at some point so that will be interesting.
Thanks again - your enthusiasm is palpable!
Over & out from Volvopandy.

Hi there,
I understand the last date posted was September 2015, so I do understand if your 340 is now no longer available. I've probably not been on the forum for a couple of years myself, and a chance log in today brought me to this threads
If your car is still available, on the slim chance, please do let me know. I would do my best to save her. If you can contact me via this or my email, josephmullarkey@yahoo.co.uk, thank you.
Kindest regards,
Joseph
