Period rally mods

Post by ebdl » 19 Dec 2005 11:29 pm

I'm thinking about getting an early 343/345 or 66 to use for historic rallies as a clubman, now that cars built between 1975 and 1981 are eligible for category 3. What I need to know is whether either of these was used as a rally car and where I can get verifiable information on modifications that were used for rallying at the time. Otherwise I'd have to keep it entirely standard and that wouldn't be as much fun, would it?

Thanks, Ed

Daf used to rally the Daf 66 = volvo 66. Try contacting the Uk Daf owners club or the Dutch owners club. The latter will probably be able to advise you on the modifications and parts needed for a 66 modification

keep us posted... sounds exciting!!

daf club NL does not have much info on rallying,

try www.rallydaf.nl

oh and;
Wheels look like early manta-KN starmags or summit like that?
very NOT. Volvo 'GT' rims. fitted as standard under the 'Black Beauty' 1978 special edition, available as accessory on the others.

think the shown rally car is 1981 model yr. (old grille, MKII bumpers)

Greetings Wouter

I had Rob at Amazon cars on to me a few months ago for uprated 300 parts. He was building a 340 for someone not sure who. When you live here a rally car is your everyday car! :wink:

At late 70's Volvo (official factory team) won the European Championship of Rallycross with Volvo 343 Turbo which had some very extensive modifications. I have an article about the champ car but it is in Finnish. I can translate things though. :P

It has full rollcage, custom racing interior, bucket seat, drivers seat was moved 32cm towards the back. Radiator is located at the back as are the oil sump and the oil cooler (car has dry sump oil system.) It has 20l fuel tank. Suspension parts were taken from Volvo 240, it has Bilstein shocks all around and leaf springs were replaced with coils. Steering rack is original but extended. Rear axle is custom made with watt-link and the diff was taken from Volvo 200-series and gearbox is a four speed Getrag from Volvo 264. It has drums at the back but I guess it has vented discs at front. Text only says that it has discs at front but if I remember correctly they are vented discs. All the welding seams in the body were welded again and with no gaps to stiffen the body. Engine is based on stock B14 block which was bored to 1709cc, cylinder head was built at France in Renault's Alpine R5-factory. Fuel system is Bosch K-Jetronic. Car's weight is 960kg and car went from 0 to 100 in 3.2s. Engine produced 276 DIN horsepower.

One or two official cars like that are currently located at the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg.

Hope that was some help. Later there were also 343s/360s with 16V 300-400hp 2.8l Volvo R-Sport engines and some were even 4x4's but I'm not sure what of those were built by Volvo's factory team. That 343 Turbo above is 100% Volvo factory team car.

I guess if you would contact Volvo or the Volvo Museum they might be able to deliver a verified modification list. Could be a worth of trying. :P

Thanks for all the replies... I'll follow up the tip-off about the museum. I wouldn't be doing anything quite as extreme as the rallycross car, especially since it has to remain road legal (and needs room for a navigator!). Were the early 343s all varios, or were there some manual versions as well? For some reason I thought the manual gearbox was introduced with the Mk.2.
