240 estate

Post by foggyjames » 24 Jan 2006 07:04 pm

Bit of a long story this, but does anyone in 'the family' want a 240 estate? 2.3 carb (B230A), auto, 7 seater, very clean leather. It needs a new head, or I can fit this at cost. It really is important to the seller (and to me) that this car goes to a good home, preferably with one of 'us'. Cheap.

Let me know if there's any interest, and I'll update this thread with more info.

cheers

Hello james, thanks for the wiring help last night, new shiny minidisc player installed and holding memory!!!

Ok, car, where is it stored, what condition, any pics, when was the last time it was on the road, what spec (gle/t) alloys, etc.

No I'm not after robbing bits off, but I may be interested in another whilst I play with my motor.
Erm, I've lost my keys again...

It's not mine, so there IS petrol in it! :D

It was on the road until a couple of weeks ago. Has a couple of months MOT but no tax. It's a GL, so pretty basic. It's very clean in general, but missing a couple of bits of trim, and has a couple of dings to the rear half (tailgate and OS rear wheelarch spring to mind). It has had a little upper sill welding, and there is a little rot around the tailgate, but it's certainly not a rotten wreck.

I'd potentially be interested in having it back in a couple months time, especially if Ruth is using Nessy in any meaningful sense (so I can't steal it), and I need to take the 360 off the road - for example to have the carbs rebuilt - which is a very real possibility. Now is just a VERY bad time to *have* to do something with it.

The only features worthy of note are the leather (and DAMN is it in amazing condition...I'll put money on it that you'll not find better) and the 7 seat conversion.

Bad news: it's located in South Devon. Good news: it does 45+ mpg cruising at ~60mph :) Having driven it in the past, I can also tell you that it's fairly fast, all things considered :)

Pics...no, although I could in theory get some if it'd make all the difference. It's a bone stock 86 model (so it has the late front end) in flat mid-blue. I'm sure you know the colour I mean. The paint is in great shape. One owner (my friend) from new, and this car has been part of the local scenary for 20 years. It has done 200k, but (prior to the helicoil/spark plug incident) it damn well PURRED, has been very well maintained, and has always been driven gently. I can vouch for this car's history from new - hence my attachment to it.

cheers

What happened to the head james? did someone do a bad job of the helicoil? if so ,I have an insert set that may get round that without taking the head off, and if its buggered anyway, what is there to loose?

It was helicoiled a while ago (not sure how long...could be years), and it blew out. I believe the helicoil actually split in half....ie: half is still in the head, half is wrapped around the plug. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

cheers

considering location and colour (such a choosy begger eh?) I'd only take it for parts james so not the best home for it to come to, surely one of our southern members should take it.

go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, GO ON!

Yes and yes Shimon, as far as I'm aware the insert broke in two. Fixing the helicoil would obviously be a far neater solution then swapping heads - assuming it's possible. The mechanic who (I assume) fitted it initially seemed to think it wasn't repairable, but then he also had an 850 to sell them, and it was his spanner monkey who'd have screwed it up (quite literally!) in the first place.

There is an outside chance that it can stay for a while on the garage forecourt where it now resides, but ultimately it will have to be broken for parts if we can't find anything better to do with it :(

cheers

I would deffo try a new helicoil or 'other type of thread insert' Erm, I dunno whether the head would have to come off to do it though. Have to be careful not to get too many metal shards into the combustion chambers. Husky's kit sounds like just the job though....

The latest news is that it can probably sit for a while...while I sort out house, job, and where to find a helicoil...
