Hella grille in scrappy near cambridge

Post by Andy's-Old-Beast » 07 Jun 2006 01:37 pm

Went to "Autos & Sons", the confusingly-named scrapyard on Newmarket road, Bottisham, Cambs (01223)812291 to get a replacement radiator for my car.

Anyway, it came off a GLT which had a Hella front grille, although the glass on the lights had been broken. I seem to recall these being popular on here (if I was keeping my car for the rest of the year, I'd have had it!) so if anyone can get some new lenses or find some aftermarket driving lights that fit, I thought you'd like to know!

The GLT also had front fog lights (seem to be in good cond.) and alloy wheels which I didn't look too closely at, but I couldn't see any damage. The instrument panel had already been wombled though.

Cheers

Out of interest, what colour was the GLT? Potentially after passenger side doors... was it a Mk2 or Mk3? Mk2 GLT wheels are quite popular...

I know someone who has a set of lamps, and a knackered grill... I'll give them a shout.

EDIT:: Thinking about it, as I have 2 cars with grills, I might take it for parts, how much do you reckon he'll want for it?

Well, yes. I'm moving to Canada in July, for a year to begin with, possibly longer. I was originally going to keep the old beast in storage until I came back, but:
1) after a year laid up, I'd have to overhaul all the brakes, tyres, drivetrain, etc.,
2) it's already quite rusty, and has a few nigglng faults (eg. speedo not working, wheel bearing & clutch need doing soon, etc) and the rust in particular will not be any better after a year of storage,
3) my plan is to buy a really nice american car (my main hobby) while I'm there and bring it back here with me, so I won't really need 2 cars.

So, it's a shame, but the old beast has to go. It's mot'd till december (i think) so if someone can make use of it, I'd rather t went to a good home instead of sitting there and going rusty.

If anyone wants to make an offer, by the way, i'm not after much for it. I was going to write up an ad in this section in a week or so, so watch this space...

Cheers

It was a 5-door Mk3 (G reg, i think) in the same colour grey/silver as mine and foggy's. Some of the interior was gone, but looked like it had been black cloth. I'm afraid I didn't take much notice of the doors, cos I was after the radiator, but I don't remember seeing any rust on the car. (bonnet was very nice, much better than mine!)

Chris, I didn't ask what he wanted for it, but they're quite a good scrap yard for prices. My rad was £25 if that's anything to go by. They usually price things in 5s, so I'd guess probably £5 or £10?

Give 'em a ring if you're not sure, say you're after the grille off the 360 which some guy had the radiator out of today! (he didn't seem to know too much about 300s so might not know what a Hella grille is)

It wasn't in mint condition, I think a small hole had been drilled in the front, probably for a badge or something. But it wasn't cracked or anything.

Cheers

No worries.

If you do go for it, let me know - I should (as long as I can find time!) be able to grab it for you and post it down to you, if you send me the cash and cover postage costs.

Up to you, if you want to save coming "up north", unless you were heading up here anyway.

Cheers mate.

Ok, I'll say I'll take it and the other guy can buy it off me if he wants. I can either get a cheque to you, erm, or theres no meeting in the next time scale is there? Save postage that way, ahh, hmm, well, I'll think of something and make sure you arn't left un funded anyway!

Thanks for offering to get it.

Hmm, yeah, it's a tricky one. I don't think there's a meet between now and when I leave the country.

Well, if you're in agreement, I'll nip over and pick it up on monday (i'm at work all weekend) then send it down with parcel farce or similar. I can take the broken lamps out if you like, to save weight - the plastic grille bit shouldn't weigh too much.

I'll pm you when I've got it, maybe send you some pics & make sure it's ok, and let you know how much it came to. A cheque is fine if it's ok with you?

Cheers mate

I'm almost tempted to say send the lot, I'd hate to have to fix either of mine if the time comes... Yeah, cheques cool with me, just have to work out where they have run off too...!

Hmmmm........ I'm still deciding whether to try and repair that grille or whether to go with aftermarket driving lights, as I'm not 100% convinced on the Hella grille look, but the lighting is ace!

Good point about the brackets dear Sir! I meant to say about those. Let me know how much you'd like for those. Sorry I've hung onto the things so long, it just isn't easy finding people to copy small numbers of things, as Carl has found with the aux gauge panel. Cheers for the offer of the spot lights, but I've got a couple of pairs already, and I'm hoping to use one of those pairs.
