Chris,

As far as I know the input shaft seals are "standard" type seals so should be able to match - given a sample - but the driveshaft seal I refer to is the "crenellated" rubber ring that seals the CV joint to the diff output flange and the hub flange.

Foggy,

Oops - the driveshaft seal is as above - not the "boot".

Collected from dealer today:-

Front cover to case (340/60 M45R/M47R) 1340989
Top cover (M45R) 1340988
Top cover (M47R) 1340991
Case to 5th.gear housing (M47R) 1340992
5th.gear housing to diff. (M47R) 1340993

G/box drain plug (all) 1381498
Diff filler plug (all) 3224662

I shall hold these in my gasket bank so when they go "unavailable" we have masters to reproduce from.

Oh! and by the way - actually learned something myself today - the diff filler plug 3224662 is also used as the sump plug for both the B14 and the B172 !!!

My gearbox is leaking from somewhere at front area. The area between diff and gearbox is dry but there's oil coming from somewhere further as there's always a small drip at the emptying plug. (lol no it's not the plug leaking I've checked, trail comes from above) Side (or the top as the box is on it's side) of the gearbox is also a bit oily so it's hard to tell if it's the intake shaft or the side/top gasket which is leaking.

Any ideas what are the common spots for leaking?

I've just tried to do this job.

Took the filler plug out first, then started work on the hex-bolts. I've got 5 of them, but the other 5 have rounded off. With the de dion axle in the way access is poor to enable me to hammer stuff into the sockets to try to get purchase. I really can't be bothered dropping the axle...

Any ideas folks?

Heat + mole grips?

You could also try sticking a jack under the box (ha...), then unbolting the two bolts (from the crossmember brackety things) into the side of the diff, and dropping the box down a bit. Watch out for handbrake cables / fuel tank link pipe, etc. You could also try lifting the axle with a jack...that kinda thing.

FWIW...you don't need to move the axle tube even to remove the box, although it is tight.

cheers

Diff cover gasket UPDATE.

Well, the "first batch" of diff cover gaskets (50) all found homes and seem to have been well received. Obviously there was an initial rush of orders when I started "production" (has it really been nearly 2 1/2 years!) but there has been a steady trickle since then.
I am loath to now abandon the project and this week have ordered (and received) new stocks of kit material (enough for a further 50 kits). The gasket material supplier charged me exactly the same as my first order in 2006 - but there has been a slight increase in capscrews and packaging materials. Copper has risen considerably in price and the sealing washers have almost doubled!

I have in the past tended to avoid paypal (with their charges I did in fact make a few pence loss on kits paid for through them) but many customers prefer them to cheques (increasingly rare) or postal orders (who uses them now?) so, in view of the general cost increases I have decided to :- put the price up shock horror! (I still won't get rich though!)

For the new batch a kit will cost £10.00 delivered to a UK address (as before the kit will consist of a replacement diff cover gasket, x10 M8x12 A2 stainless steel inhex capscrews, x10 M8 s/s flat washers, x2 M18x24x1.5 copper sealing washers for the drain and filler plugs and an instruction/specs. sheet packed in a protective card envelope).

If anybody is going to the BKV and need a kit I should have some with me.

Still a downright bargain in my eyes Mac. I didn't realise you were making a loss, I feel a bit bad about it now. Put me down for a couple of kits after the 25th, I'm sure I'll need them sooner or later. 340pw

Kaos,

Re your sump and filler plugs:-

The B14, B172, and the B200 use the same sump plug which is the same plug as the diff. filler/level plug. Certainly until recently these were available under part no.3224662 (I bought 5 a few months ago). The "sump" plugs use "crushable" copper sealing washers (part no.3343859 or 11998), the "filler" plug uses a solid washer (947625 as I supply in my kits).
The diff drain plug I believe is NLA but was part no.3292717 (I have one reference example) it uses the same washer as the filler plug.

The M47R drain plug was available until recently (I bought a reference sample) under pt.no.1381498. Whilst the filler plug (960632 upto 1986 and 1381504 1987 on I think are now NLA . Both filler and drain use sealing washer 947624.

Might be worth checking current position with a dealer.
