FREE! 360 Taxed & MOTd

Post by Andy's-Old-Beast » 11 Sep 2006 02:37 am

Hi folks, remember me? Well, no matter. The point is, the guy who was going to buy my 360 off me decided he doesn't want it, cos he's only 17 and can't afford the insurance.

So, the car has sat on my dad's driveway for a couple of weeks, but now he wants rid of it. He's going to sell the '666' number plate to some reg. transfer company for me, then the rest of the car gets scrapped. Before that happens though, I'd like to offer it to anyone on here who fancies saving it one last time from the crusher.

It's a 1989 360GLE, 5spd, 5door, silver/grey. Full details and LOADS of pictures in the "Beast up for grabs" and "More of the Beast" posts in this forum. MOT till december, and tax is current but I can't remember when it runs out. It starts, runs and drives fine, but to make it fully road legal you'd need 1 new tyre and to fix the speedo. And a new number plate, obviously! (See DVLA for cost, I have no idea!)

Since the pictures were taken, the aftermarket cruise control, rear 6x9 speakers and snooper radar detector have been removed and are not included with the car. The JVC CD player has been swapped for an Aiwa cassette player. Plastic floor mats and 2 spare wheels are included.

This is a tatty but reasonably solid car which served me well as a daily driver until I left the country. There's plenty of surface rust, but nothing structural and it should be good for a few more years yet. With a small amount of work and the price of new number plate it would be an ideal cheap runner for someone with a bit of mechanical knowledge, or could be broken for spares, made into a cheapo drifter / rally car, banger racer, etc.

If you think you can make use of the car, let me know ASAP before my dad scraps it, and it's yours to drive home! (I haven't worked out how driving it would work if the number plate is sold - I guess you could drive the car home before the number plate is sold, then my dad would post you the V5 forms to make the car yours after he's sold the plate??) It's located about 15 minutes from junction 10 of the M11, just south of Cambridge.

Sorry, but I'm not interested in breaking it myself because I don't want to give my dad any more hassle than he's already had to deal with, and he wants to drive it to the scrappy rather than pay to get it collected. It's all or nothing I'm afraid!

I hope someone can save this car, we have done many miles together and I'm sad to see it go! I'd rather see it given another chance to be a comfortable daily runabout for someone else.

If you're interested, pm me or email me at andytransam@hotmail.com.

Cheers, Andy.

Hi Andy ,

sorry to hear the guy let you down ,

the number plate thing is a bit of a minefield as I have found out .

The companys that buy the numberplates from you offer you peanuts ,

I just sent off to one company who offered to
"buy the plate to put in there stock "
and bearing in mind my plate is "valued " and advertised at £1,500 they offered me £100.00 for it and an extra £80.00 if it was already on a retention certificate.

The £1,500 is the selling price and includes the companys fees and commission , If sold the plate would return to me £1,100 .

not many companys buy number plates ,

they prefer to sell them on a comission basis ( basically just advertising it on your behalf )as that way they are not buying something they may have to sit on for a year before selling it again.

Because you want rid of the car The best bet (if funds allow) is for you to get it put on a retention certificate yourself which costs about £105.00 iirc

The £105 is made up of a £25.00 retention fee and £80.00 assignment fee
you do this buy completeing a form V778/1 from the DVLA .
the retention certificate is renewable ( if needed ) each year for £25.00

The beauty of this scheme is that (included in the deal ) you are issued with an age related number plate for your car so that you can still sell it .

The downside is that you have to keep the car until the transfer is completed as sometimes they can ask to inspect the donor car .

Hope this is of some help to you (and your dad)

Thanks Mick.

That is indeed handy to know. My plate was "valued" at £700! However, after 3 weeks advertising it (with the company which valued it) at £250 for a quick sale, nobody seems to be interested.

I think I'll go for the retention, if my dad hasn't already signed anything else. Just to complicate things even more, he's away on holiday for a few days!!

If I can get it on retention, I'll be able to sell (or give away) the rest of the car quickly, then sell the plate at my leisure. Or even keep it for my next car when I get back to england!

Have you got any idea how long the process takes? You said I'd need to hang on to the car until it's completed?

Thanks for your help Mick. Hope everyone is doing well and having fun in your 300s!

if you have a local dvla office , I would suggest sending your dad down there with the V5 (registration sheet ), mot and tax disc off of the car fill in the form and they may even do it while you wait as they are on line to Swansea

The Beast is mine!

Went & collected the car on Sunday, drove it 100 miles or so home. Drives well, considering it's stood for 2 months since Andy left for Canada. Taken it to work a couple of times already, service on Friday, then off to North Wales on Saturday for 2 weeks!

Thanks for the car, Andy!

Thanks! Looking forward to the trip. Getting the car serviced on Friday, spent some time T-cutting yesterday evening & it's coming up nicely. Still got rust, though...

Hi, I just logged on again for a quick look - I've been busy working and sightseeing for the last couple of weeks! Glad to hear the car got you home ok, 27.86! No reason why it wouldn't, but it's been parked up a while.

Also, I've just spotted your speedo question in the general forum - you should have asked me! I was using the digital speedo on my "safety" camera detector after the real speedo broke, but I made a mental note of the rough rpm/road speed comparisons. I used to go on 2000 rpm being roughly 10x the gear number, eg. 2000 rpm in 3rd = 30mph, in 4th = 40mph, in 5th = 50 mph. 60 mph was about 2500 rpm, and 70 was 3000 rpm. Not exact speeds, but close enough to slow down to them in case of police sightings.

As for the fault, my guess would be the cable. The speedo started jumping around, and it got worse until it stopped altogether.

Well, I hope you're enjoying the old beast, and I hope it gives you a trouble-free holiday in wales. Looking forward to seeing some pics of a suitably posed beast in front of some welsh scenery!

Thanks, Andy. Got back from Wales last night, & the car has behaved really well. Had one problem where it didn't want to start after a really rainy night, but a bit of WD40 into the distributor sorted that out.

Unfortunately, my dad had a stroke a couple of days ago so I'm off to Yorkshire in it this morning!

Will post pics when they're developed.
