360 GLEi SE

Post by foggyjames » 12 Oct 2007 12:55 am

I've been offered a 1986 360 GLEi SE (saloon). These special edition cars have leather and air con. This is *another* SE....not the one I'm supposed to be getting to part out!

It needs MOT, but the lady selling it claims it has failed on the exhaust and a pair of tyres - both very easy fixes.

Is anyone interested in the car? We'll obviously have to work out what sort of condition it's in once it appears, but it sounds fundamentally solid, on the face of it. I'm not paying a great deal for it, so I expect £2-300 would secure it with a fresh MOT. If it turns out to be a complete dog, I shouldn't lose out if we end up parting it out.

cheers

If you do end up taking it apart, I'd be keen on some air con parts and the front seats (as is everyone else probably :) )

It'd obviously be nicer if it was kept in one piece though ...

Right, well we've got a couple of options. The car currently doesn't have MOT, and is located in Bedford. I can arrange delivery for a suitable fee. In terms of price...I expect we're looking at £100-150 once we've factored in a bit of beer money for me and my mate who's located it for me.

Alternatively, I can arrange to have it MOT'd. Depending on how that works out, I'd expect it to add another £100-150 to the price...perhaps more if 'new' tyres are wanted. It needs an exhaust, and I have a couple of those I can pass on for a suitable price.

I'm not sure of the condition. The lady says it isn't rusty, but I suspect it has a few battle scars from car parks, etc. I'll know more pretty soon.

cheers

Right...John and Shimon have expressed an interest, as has a chap who emailed me. Nothing is decided yet, but I think we'll get the car back, and take it from there. I guess the bottom line is that it's first come, first served...

I'm 10 minutes from Bedford. If it helps, I can take a snout and some photos.

That be me, the car has been saved and stored somewhere safe from the possible collection of scrap metal merchants.

Foggy will update this thread with details, once we've properly assessed the car.

Ok, I had a look at the car today. Here's the deal.

The body is very clean for the year (86). The rear arches have been replaced in the past, but one is failing again. Judging by the profile, the work wasn't top quality...but they're not going to fail an MOT, and don't look terrible...but if you want them to look A1, they'll need doing again within a couple of years.

The exhaust blow isn't terrible. We suspect it's the mid to rear joint leaking, but I've left a couple of exhaust sections with Chesh for us to look at fitting at a later date.

It has a small hole on each sill - both pretty much right in the centre. A patch 2" by 4" would cover each with ease. Both sills have been patched extensively (not in a patchwork quilt sense!) before, but are still solid from this work, but would benefit from being 'finished' correctly - welds ground back, and painted properly. They're currently classic "MOT bodge" finish - unground welds, and covered in underseal.

There is some sort of clutch issue. The clutch is stiff, and appears to drag very slightly, making gear selection sluggish. It's perfectly driveable, but it's not right. I'm not going to look into that, but it needs addressing by the new owner, eventually. The clutch cable looks new, and the clutch biting point is low, suggesting a new clutch. Perhaps the splines need greasing?

So...in summary...it's better than I expected. It's pretty good for rust, and it's fairly clean and straight. The welding required is a bummer, as we don't know anyone suitable in Bedford, and it's bound to push the MOT'd price (if required) up a bit. The clutch is a strange one, but it doesn't stop the car driving. Other than that, it's a pretty decent car.

cheers

Would like to confirm that I'm no longer chasing due to a change of plan and the possibility of another new project. Sorry I didn't mention this earlier.

If it does end up being broken for parts I'm still interested, but I'm glad to see it being kept in one piece ...
