free comes with a partly stripped car , if any of you are brave enough to swap it over , or at least strip it to make use of it .

The trouble with the porka transaxles is they have a whacking great bellhousing on the front so you'd need to chop that down to a reasonable size, then you'd have no way of attaching the torque tube. Plus the propshaft connects to the box with the same weak design of clamp as a 360, so I can't see it being any stronger at all. I recently had a full 360 driveline laid out next to a 924 one just to have a look, and the volvo setup seems better to me.

big bellhousing aside , they are stronger , and some come with LSD in the 944

So is an M90 though, and the amount of work involved is pretty comparable.

You need to build a hybrid torque tube and hybrid prop shaft to make this set up work I reckon. The torque tube could be fabbed up with some decent home welding skills, but the prop shaft will have to be custom machine shop unless you're the fabricator ninja.

Or you could install it as it is in the porsche, (having cut the rear floor to suit) with TWO BELLHOUSINGS, one of which doesn't even have a clutch in it FFS, it's only there so it's easier for them to fob off an old audi 80 gearbox as some sort of special weight distribution deal. The 924 is a parts bin runt, with old VW parts everywhere, beetle rear suspension (effectively), it's a cost-cutting compromise... Just like a 300.

Sorry, didn't read the thread properly before posting. I agree 924 is a weak design - and doesn't surprise me that the drive train is weak, since al it had to deal with was an engine stolen out of a van...

944 Turbo on the other hand must be built to take some serious torque.
Other option is a 928 - although they're rare and presumably expensive to find in manual.
Alfa 75 also has the transaxle - and that'll take 350bhp stock.

But all of these have a stupid bellhousing at the back. It's an attractive idea to keep the rear mounted box when going above 300hp in a 300, but it would probably be easier to use a borg-warner T5 box with the bellhousing unbolted (as opposed to sawn off, like it would be with a cast porsche item). Or better still, M90 and 240 axle, got to be well capable of 500hp.

What's the transaxle that's well known in tuning circles that was fitted to some sort of Renault van?

EDIT: Renault UN1, anyone know anything about them?

EDIT 2: Bah, still the bellhousing issue I think... they were used in Lotus Elan's though it seems

Gearbox and diff combined into one unit. FWD Audis and some VWs have them, as well as porsche 911s, old skodas, most mid engined stuff too. A front wheel drive gearbox could be considered a transaxle too, as it combines the diff into the box. Pics are needed I think.

That GTV set up looks tasty - even with the inboard brakes. But yeah - you'd need to make room for the bellhousing thingy - would probably work better with a 340 petrol tank rather than the 360 one.

renault UN1 is also a good idea , it has removable bellhousing .(ive got a renault transaxle)

nobody said you shouldnt cut the bellhousing off the porsche one either - the biggest point was that this was for free , would have good ratios , and be pretty easy to find parts .

still not enough 340s making enough power to trouble somebody going to the expense of doing it to find out .

Big bump. I reckon if you're going to the trouble of doing that much work, the only choice is the Tremec T56 from the C5 Vette. That'll surely old 500lbft in something as light as a 300, gives 6 speeds, plenty of parts, etc...
