Pete Farrell fitted my temp gauge might be worth emailing him or Foggy , if I remember correctly all the wiring is on the back of the dash already ,the wiring to the sensor should be coiled up near the battery, Do you know if its got the sensor though , the sensor fits in a hole on the offside bumper mounting iron

I've been outbid!
lentinj the temp gauge can be a simple affair. Is your car a 360 GLT? If so that makes life even easier as the wiring will already be there as Mick says. This ambient temp gauge comes with the sensor, however the plug that fits this would help you a lot. Otherwise it may be slightly tricky, not impossible. If you have a prewired car, the lead and connector plug will be rolled up under the air filter box on the 2.0 injection model near the back of the headlight. Then it really is a simple plug and play affair! The sensor will mount in a small hole in the bumper mounting behind the bolt cover cap. If you do win it and don't have a prewired car I will be able to have a look and tell you which connector to join the two wires to at the dash board end. You'll need to remove the dash diplay unit, but that's not difficult and the gauge does simply screw in place and four pins plug into a prewired plug.
Best of luck and I hope I get my vacuum econ gauge now! I had a look at a car that did have one so I know where the pipework goes!

i wouldnt be sure that the wiring is already there.. even if it isnt, its pretty easy to do - you just need a temp sensor from a volvo 400

The temp sensor is apparently already there, it's just the connecting plug I would be concerned about finding, so a 400 is indeed the way to go. As for the wiring being present, I'm nearly 100 % sure now that all 360 GLT's in the UK had the wiring present for the ambient temp gauges, and plugged into the multiplug at the back of the dash. 340's however did not afaik. And 360 carbs, I don't know, but I don't think it was present.

If you do need to get a plug from a 400, look for one that has the "info centre", and pop the bonnet, it's between the font bumper and the radiator.
The wires the sensor plugs into dash side are white/black stripe and brown, which will be taped up by the steering column.

It might be worth checking with the seller of the temp gauge that it is definitely for the VDO cluster, as the Smiths one had lettering which (rather like that one) was a fair bit smaller than the gauge face. The giveaway is that the VDO one has four long pins for the connection, whereas the smiths one has a spade connector, etc...
Given that it says 1991, I think it's very highly unlikely that it's anything other than a VDO one, and the picture is probably just a bit deceptive, but it might be worth checking. Here speaks a man who once bought a Smiths one assuming it would fit...
Good luck chaps....
cheers
James

Oh well, neither of us won! Sniped at the end, however he paid top money for them! £27.26 plus £4 postage for the ambient temp gauge and I left it at £20 for the econ gauge, so he paid £21 plus £4 postage for the econ gauge. A determind guy, that's all I can say! In that case chaps, I'm still on the look out for an Econ gauge if you should spot one. Cheers.

Let me be the first to welcome you, and you are the 300th member! Well, with regards to the ambient temperature gauge, FoggyJames is the man to talk to, the gauge guru! The ambient temperature gauges are sometimes easier to find in a working condition, as the econ gauges have a habit of breaking! I currently have an ambient temperature gauge fitted to my car, but no econ gauge, yet!

LOL, so who is the present for? Sounds like a good present for a 300 enthusiast. Well, my tips for finding one would be to look in scrapyards for the later models, the last of the 340's did tend to have a few extra items. I'll ask James if he still has a spare ambient temperature gauge, I think he is currently out of these gauges. Other than that there was one on Ebay earlier, as you may have seen, which sold for £27.26, they don't seem to come up often on there either. Your best bet is scrapyards to be honest, they didn't seem to be an extra that people were willing to pay for unfortunately, so are rather rare now! Good luck.
