Holland is cool ...

Post by trabitom99 » 09 Aug 2009 12:03 pm

... for so many reasons. "The little differences" quoting Pulp Fiction. But what you really notice is the amount of older cars everywhere, maybe because cars over 25 years of age are tax free? Some random pics from a week in and around Amsterdam:

No idea! They're half the size of a Trabant and use the cycle lanes.

Don't you know these these? They are designed as a car for elderly people that don't have their licence. You can drive it any place a tractor can drive, and they go 45 km/h, they are dangerous as hell because people that drive one can't drive, otherwise they would have bought a normal car.

Holland is quite nice for spotting older cars. Especcially the 25-year-no-tax rule helps keeping classics on the road.
If you are still in Holland, and you come near Eindhoven, give me a call for a cup of coffee Tom (if you still have my number ofcourse  )

The little red car is called a Canta, and it's designed for disabled people. You can check out all the specs here: http://www.waaijenberg.com/canta. The cars Jos refers to are 'brommobielen' (or 'moped cars') which are not specifically targeted to the disabled, but to people without a driver's license. And as such, every now and then a news message pops up about elderly people having caused miles of traffic jams for driving on a motorway @ 25 mph

That serpenta green Volvo 66 GL has come up quite a few times at some DAF meets. It's nicknamed 'Sukke'; go out and look for it at http://www.siteje.com ;)

Apart from being exempt from paying road tax (regardless of their usage, mileage, condition or fuel type), cars of 25 and over are very easy to import, and insurance rates are very low when not used on a daily basis.

Holland is great, but your neck of the woods isn't so bad either ;-)

We lived near an old people's home. Maybe that's why there were so many of them?

That's a coincidence, I'll check it out :-)

Cars in Dutch streets are so much more interesting than those in Germany. Here, 99% of all cars are silver, black or dark blue. Anything else and people are worried about resale value. 99% of all Volvos are estates, S4/7/90s, 850 / 700 / 900 saloons are very rare. Any car with a bit of superficial rust is deemed a hazard for pedestrians and either fixed or scrapped at the next MOT. Any classic is safely locked away in a garage.

Will do :-) Back in D at the moment though ...

One of three I spotted on the first day! Also, an NSU Ro80, several 1970's Beamers, and half a dozen W123 Mercs, some of which were so run down even a Somali taxi driver would have given them the thumbs-down ...

What else is great about Holland besides, cars, bins and old Gouda:

* health and safety - or lack of it. No cyclist or moped rider wears a helmet.
* hagelslag - nothing to do with the red light district, tasty chocolate sprinkles for your breakfast
* coffee. Particularly the complementary cup in the supermarkets.

What's not so good:

* supposedly there is a 120 kph speed limit, all I ever saw was 100 kph or 90 kph in building sites. Drives you mad!
* dutch bikes "omafiets" - they have their fans in Germany too, but they're heavy, many have no gears or front brakes (why, with no hills?) and the "sit up and beg" sitting position makes your bum ache after 5 mins.

we think wearing a helmet on a bike is stupid looking :D on the blue license plated moped's (max 25kmh) you don't have to wear a helmet by law, but on the yellow license placed (max 45kmh) you have to by law.

have you tried "vlokken" or "vlokfeest", allmost the same stuff and definatly worth a try

speed limit is indeed present, but only on a few highways at the moment, everywhere are building sites and most of the highways around the "randstad" are 100 or 80kmh..

those bikes are espescially designed for drunk people to get home safely!!, simple bike wich practically can't break down and because they don't have gears you can never drive so fast that you will put your self at harm. i have one to only for the trips to a bar or disco
