Hey, great link! Just found out the only UK-registered car I've ever owned has been off the road since August 2001. Pity, but not surprising - it was a Peugeot

It was built in Coventry though ;-)

1988 405 1.6 GL - fun-ish to drive, but it just fell apart in my hands. Recon engine after 70,000 miles, carb overhaul, leaky, two head gaskets ...

I had a 405 estate and ran it for 125,000 with not even one problem. I sold the car because I was bored and fancied something else. I regreted that everyday for 18 months after that, as the car I replaced it with was nothing but problems. Thants why I went back to classic cars. I thought that if I was going to have to put up with trouble, I might as well like and enjoy the car that I was having trouble with.

I made another decission at that time as well. It was never to buy a car with a driver's air-bag. The reason being that as I can't drive due to my eyesight and have to sit in the passenger seat, why should I pay for a car that will save the driver and kill me in the event of an accident, better not to have a driver's airbag so the driver will take more care. Lol.

Haha I ended up getting given an 89 1.6 GR for a brief period (couldn't be arsed to fix a leaky water pump, so scrapped it). Went well for a 1.6 though, I think it may have been quicker than the GLT

EDIT: Ben, sounds a bargain, is it the V6?

I think it is Steve.
I hadnt taken much interest in it but it pulled up outside the house and John commented on how clean it looked.
Then said 'does that say V6 on the back!?'
my response- 'er, i dunno. probably.'

Hes was trying to talk me into having it before I bought the GLT.
I was very uninterested though.
Wish I'd taken it now mind.

Waterpump? Forgot to mention that, mine was leaky too ... The 1.6 405 definitely accelerated better than a GLT (top speed the same though), had good seats, was roomy, quiet(ish), comfy ride and no rust whatsoever despite never being garaged. But all that is no use if it keeps breaking down! Maybe the cars got better throughout the production run, but this was the newest car I've ever owned, and the most unreliable, despite one careful previous owner (dad) and dealer service history.

Luckily, we had our old 343 to fall back on, double the mileage, twice as old and none of the 405's problems. But the rust got that in the end.

Think you were maybe unlucky with yours, prior to the water pump it had been fine for a previous 5 years of my Dad owning it, and I don't think it ever got serviced  Back brakes were always problematic though. I even put it through a 'normal' MOT rather than a series of suspicious MOT's it had previously, it only failed on 2 number plate bulbs.

What would've been ideal was a 360 with the 405's inabilty to rust and quietness! Dare I say it I'd still be tempted by an Mi16

My model was registered early in 1988 (so possibly even built in 1987?) so I'm sure lots of niggles would have been fixed in the end. But aside from major mechanical trouble (engine, carb) there were so many niggles which spoiled it, a squealing ventilation fan, which eventually packed up completely, and those leaky door seals! I remember having to de-ice the car inside over winter. I dread to think what might have happened if it had had any electrical gizmos ...

Every now an then I think of an Mi16 too :-) But they are hugely rare over here, even finding a regular 405 saloon is difficult.
