Touch up paint in this weather?

Post by trabitom99 » 24 Jan 2010 02:23 pm

Just a quick question - the GLT is clean and dry in the garage (for the first time in ages) and I've got an hours' worth of time to work on the car (for the first time in ages). But it's only +1 deg outside.

Is it OK to use primer and paint now or should I wait till it's warmer?

Thanks for any quick replies!

ideally you need an enviroment of at least 20°C, paint won't handle or dry too well below that espescially with temperature around 0°C

Thanks Anjo! I kind of suspected that, and cleaned up some old seat belts destined for the 343 instead ;-)

Cheers

However if you can use a small heater and get the panel/component to at least 20C it will dry fine.
I painted the alloys on my white car with this method.

I often woundered if heating the metal with something simple like a hairdryer would work?

Hairdryer sounds like a good idea ... Problem is I've got no electricity in the garage and that means I'd have to drive back to my house to heat it by which time I've got loads of slush on the sills again. Looks like the touch-up jobs will have to wait a bit longer.

Thanks for all the advice!

I run a little gas heater in my garage that takes the 15kg butane bottles, work wonders for painting.

That reminds me, my local tool factors rents those things out, maybe I'll give that a go ...
