Digging for horses...

Post by CBA » 24 Apr 2010 05:54 am

After new tyres, tappet adjustment (few thou closer than spec) and a check of oils and fluid I decided it's time to see what she can do - Approached 100MPH and thought best not *THRASH* it, so came off motorway, onto country roads and had a go with the handling on the limit, I LIKE IT!, you don't have to go fast to feel like your going fast, you can feel the speed, it;s so predictable, as someone else said you really do just play with it in corners, but it's responsive so long as you give it enough input it can be thrown around pretty nifty like.

Not that I NEED more power, I'm ok with the 70BHP or so, but I hear these engines are detuned at the factory, what can I do to get at the locked up horses?
just curious really...

Can the renix unit be reprogrammed... has it got an EEPROM or something in there? I can find a BBC Micro/PIC I'm sure to read the data... and I know a programmer who could figure out the data... If I can then find a "tuner" whom can modify the simplified data for power... give NEW data back to programmer, put his version on the chip, or a new chip (interchangeable) then plug it in / dock fire out...
Or is it an electro mechanical device... what the hell is it?

Anyone else get where I'm coming from?

It's a challenge!

Yup, there is an eprom in there, but the problem is that no one has yet managed to get the resin out the back of the renix whilst keeping the unit alive. If you want a play with sparks and then would look to the carb separate later I'd say grab a megajolt kit, they arn't that expensive from memory. If you want to convert to FI and do both at once look at megasquirt.

Think I'll get a renix unit if I find one at the scrapper, I guess the resin is poured in then sets, all over the circuitry and chip?
Does anyone know what the resin is made of... maybe it could be dissolved... cotton bud it away bit by bit with some solvent?

i wouldn't even bother the trouble doing so, there are a lot of other small things that the B14's are downgraded from and the renix isn't one of them.

even if you manage to do it, what's the gain; max 5 horses or so?

Ok, cool - I had a thought about moving the crank sensor a few degrees to advance/retard the whole map... fit some movable clamp to the sensor so it can go 10 degrees either way... doubt it would work tho,

I'd rather have a normal dizzy than a renix anyway, but I'll try to crack a renix if I find one.

How about digging into the renix from the back? drill out the chips pins, solder a 16pin or whatever socket directly to the tracks (securely and professionally)...

What is the eeprom eprom rom, model no of chip? anyone got the data lifted off it? - my method means killing the chip. anyone have a "live" chip and a dead renix?
Any broken/spare/unneded renix's would be good, I will pay for postage.

I will chuck some time into this and push my patchy electronics, engineering and researching skills to the max sm2 .

What should I get on a full tank? given a bit of thrashing and naff all fuel conserving driving? is 200 miles really bad, or to be expected?
